Dallas Athletes Racing
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 56m 30s
Overall Rank = 14/52
Age Group = F 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/12
Pre-race routine:

woke up at 4am had breakfast and coffee. Drove an hour to race site-
Event warmup:

some stretching but no swimming or anything else.
Swim
  • 29m 52s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

No complaints here. I was relaxed had more in the tank but no one to swim with that was staying on course. there were 2 other swimmer types in my wave but both of them took a sharp right and went off course so after the first turn I was on my own. I realize why I made that mistake last time- the orange return buoys look just like the orange turn around buoy.
What would you do differently?:

I wish every swim was like this 1.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Good T1. I'm pleased with my T1 that inlcudes a bit of running distance. I feel like my fitness is finally showing up or my swim was so easy that I had plenty of room to run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 22m 50s
  • 23 miles
  • 16.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I was passed by 1 lady on a road bike. Other than that it was all fancy bikes in aero. Saw some drafters- so annoying now. I'm ready to upgrade from my road bike to a TT. This part of the race I road right up to zone 4 hr and just stayed there. I did attack the last hill that is the steepest on course. Good choice!
What would you do differently?:

Buy a TT bike!
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

T2 is a little slower vs average than T1 with some consistency. But the time that I lose to the leaders in T2 is nothing compared to the 15 minutes on the bike and 15 mins on the run.
What would you do differently?:

I'm guessing that time lost is from running right off the bike. I walked the bike most the way through transition. probably need to work on off the bike fitness.
Run
  • 59m 46s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Sub 1 hour!!!!!! number 1 the weather was much cooler than we have been training in. Even given that I kept dumping water on me and putting ice in my bra. #2 I trusted my training/ race plan and walked the aid stations and ran to HR zone 5 between. I'm really happy with how this worked out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing until I train up and become a better runner. This is flat out my best that I could do to-date and today.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate bbq

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my fitness - I executed the best race I was capable of for the fitness I have attained. I was spent after this race and it took me 2 days longer than expected to recover.

Event comments:

I love the Dallas Athletes events. I did most of them this year. Well organized and run with just enough entertainment. I wish there were more athletes participating! 1 request would be to change the out buoys on the swim to orange and the back to yellow. I understand that is not nautically correct but it's easier to see orange than yellow when looking into the sun.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
