Pre-race routine:

I have been injured on/off all year. Had major hip surgery August 2015 that I healed from but years of useing a bad hip had damaged my hamstring, adductor, and some back ligaments that held the hip in place. I had had PRP and three prolo shots trying to get right. Felt great in June, but then had a terrible July and August. Decided last minute just to do AC since I could run 5 miles. Felt great, so I decided 9 days before IMMD just to give it a go. I had lost the horse I had been riding for 6 years and was just a wreck from that, I needed to try to do this for me. If I needed to walk, so be it. I was going to claim my identity back as an ironman.

It poured the entire week leading up to the race, and the winds! Boy they didn't look good on Thursday. Plus ironman village was on a dock and the bike shop was under 6 inches of water! The waves were 2-4 ft high and crashing over the dock. Oy. I had a bad feeling we weren't swimming, but every one said, oh it will be calm by Saturday!
Event warmup:

Got up at 3:50, out the door by 4:15, at Mace's Middle school in Cambridge for the shuttle at 5:00. Boy was I glad, b/c they ran out of parking I imagine at 5:15! I was solo, and thats a weird feeling, doing this whole race solo. But I had Christine, Jenny, Michele, Michelle, and Ann from IMS here to voluncheer and they were such a welcome sight! Plus, being a home race, there were lots of MMTC racers and volunteers and Fexy folk as well. It was a blessing that everywhere I went, I saw a familiar face. Weird not having my own sherpa though, and I do miss that, but nevertheless, I'm not gonna let it stop me from doing races!

Well we got in our wetsuits, they told us we would wait 30 min till the sun came up, that came and the waves were still huge. It didn't look good.

Comments:

SWIM CANCELLED! Grrrrrr. But I was relieved, as it was a dangerous swell and chop. Someone would have died out there I am positive. I know I could have swam in it, but the kayaks and SUPs couldn't support us.

Comments:

I pretty much felt terrible this entire bike ride. My only thought is that my legs weren't used to continuously biking 100 miles (I had done centuries with a break every 20 miles). Next time I definitely have to train that, although it would kill me.

First time I didn't pass a lot of folks and I got passed. It was upsetting, but then I told myself hey you just decided to race last week! Enjoy the bike ride.

Comments:

Considering we had to slog through 3 puddles that were ankle-shin deep 8 times total, I was thrilled. I was able to run a good portion of it, despite blisters and the fact that I had only ran 350 total miles for the year! I'll take it for sure! I did walk around 9 miles with Andi and Paul from Mid Maryland miles 14-23. That revived me at the end and I pretty much ran the last 3.
Post race
Warm down:

Was a pretty disastrous finish. It was a torrential downpour. I found my dad in the massage tent then we walked back to find mom who I saw in a green poncho looking miserable, but so very happy. I'm so happy they came! we walked to their car, then they took me back to my car at the Middle School where I had taken the shuttle. Drove back to as close as I could get by the YMCA, then walked shivering to transition. it was a bit of a mess to get bags and they made us walk through the water and muck on the field at great marsh.

Event comments:

The race director is amazing. The weather was dreadful. Cancelled swim, rerouted bike course due to flooding, then we had to run in flooding on the run!

I'm so very thankful that I got to start early. It was terrible for the later folks for sure. No one on the run and it was dark the later it got. But everyone when I was out there was in great spirits. Even had a guy in a speedo in a lawn chair in the water cheering people on. And even Gerry stood in bare feet on the run course in the flooded area giving high fives.

I just love the area, and Gerry. But the weather! ugh...This race needs to be in September.

Iron distance racing depends on the three pillars of pacing, nutrition and mental outlook. Training these three areas can significantly improve your race.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
