Subject: AM I ready for Lake Placid?
So, I just got an email from a girl who inspired me to do the HIM I'm racing in this weekend. She is doing Lake Placid next July.

I don't have any idea how long it would take to do that crazy length... I think its around 10 months. I plan to take Sept off in terms of training and then aim for a marathon in Jan.

Do I have a reasonable amount of time to train for an IM if I start in Oct?

Holy crap...I might just be crazy enough to do this..... lol

I believe IMLP is sold out for 2007

Most IM plans are 24 weeks or less, so you would have time.

Crap...you're right. Damn....

Can anyone recommend another IM in the US (or canada) that's reasonably flat and occurs in late summer early fall 07?

Cheers

IM Wisconsin is not flat, but registration opens a week from Monday (the 11th).  Race will be in Sept 07.

Ironman Florida is about as flat as you can imagine. Its the first week in November, not sure if that qualifies as early fall.

If you do it, be prepared to register quickly the day after this years race. I think it sold out in 3 hours this year.

For what it's worth, IMLP is one of the hilliest IM's - somewhere there's a page that shows the elevation for each (someone posted it on another thread but I can't find it on the ironman.com site either - i'll repost if i can find it). IM FL is relatively flat and IMAZ is hillier than i thought. Not that I have done one myself but my two good friends have each done LP and AZ.

this is the link I was referring to / looking for:
http://www.ironmannorthamerica.com/compare/comparebike.php

"USA" refers to Lake Placid

You could also train for Coeur d'Alene which is in late June although it says it is sold out to "general entry". You already have the HIM base, so you can totally do CDA in June - 8-9 months of training (check out team in training - i saw that the LA chapter is offering this race as an option).

Good luck finding a race in 2007. I guess you can't hang up your long course swim cap just yet.

Non Ironman Brand Long Course Triathlons.  i.e. NO 90 minute sell outs/ cheaper etc etc....Some really great races here - they just don't have the marketing muscle of "Ironman- WTC" behind them.  They need your support! :-)  Good luck!

Caren, I looked at your log and think that you can realistically plan for an HIM next season.  I found that the HIM was easier than an olympic because I felt less rushed in the transition zones.  Look for a HIM event that will occur in September when the weather is cooling and you have had a full season of training and competing.  Try the HIM training program that is available on this site.  I followed this program and did an HIM this season without a problem.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=52

The only HIM that I have done thus far is the Canadian Half Iron Distance triathlon in Ottawa.  It is a beautiful course that is almost perfectly flat.  The run and bike legs wind along the picturesque Rideau Canal and the road is closed to traffic.  There are aid stations dispensing water and food along the bike and run courses.  On the bike course, you have an aid station at the end of the 15km loop (you do 6 loops, hence 6 "pit" stops) on the the bike course and aid stations every 1.9 km on the run course.  This triathlon is very well organized with hundreds of volunteers helping out and thousands of fans cheering you on.

That is a very good link Jimmyfish.  I would like to do the Quelle Roth someday, since I lived in Nurnberg for 3 years.

Thanks for the guidance on the HIM training, but that's actually what I'm doing tomorrow, so I'm looking to kick it up a notch next fall.

As for the non Ironman events... hmmm I didn't realize there was such a thing. I'll check it out!

Cheers
Caren

There's Esprit Triathlon in Montreal in Sept. (might actually be tomorrow) Extremely flat!! Except it has a few quirks. The bike is on an auto race course and is...um...about 40 laps. Think the run is a few laps too. And it's not alot of racers - <100 for the Full distance.
