I'm not sure if this is exactly the right place for this, but I am here and would like some suggestions. I am looking for races for next year and found one in New York that is already posted for registration. It is the Tupper Lake Tinman, but they also have what they call a Sprint distance, the half Tinman (I think it should be Aluminum Foil). The distances are 880/24.8 and 6.2. The 880 swim is the one that I am most concerned with. Is this a little much for the first one? I am anxious to get something on my schedule, and I am trying to resist my natural tendency to overdo things, but I want to keep challenged and not fall into a comfort zone. Patience may be a virtue, but can I choose a different one?

Well, only you can really answer this. What is that date of the tri and do you think there is enough time to train up to those distances (you can look at training plans for guidance)? I chose a Sprint for my first tri (coming up October 1) and started training for it at the end of June. A 1/4 mile swim, 15.9 bike, and 3.5 mile run seemed like a good starting point for a first-race experience. I feel plenty motivated by it and while I'm nervous, I'm NOT terrified. I would be terrified of an Oly distance race right now. But that's ME.

This is a personal thing. I think that you can probably train up to those Olympic distances (their "Sprint" distance doens't really look like a Sprint to me, it looks like an Oly!) by next spring if you stay consistent with your training.... so really, it is how YOU feel about it!

Registering for your first race is pretty darn exciting, whichever distance you choose!

Thanks Michelle. That was a helpful perspective. From where I am right now fitness wise, I think a true sprint distance race would me a much better starting point. The race date is June 30, so I could always evaluate things after three months and sign up at a later date. You are right about the excitement and fear of the first one. Thanks again.

John,

It's a long winter ahead, and the race list will get a lot more populated once it's actually 2007. Very few companies advertise this far ahead. Maybe set a few mini-goals for now, like 500 continuous yards in the pool and a certain 5K time, and sign up for the race later.

ETA: One thing with the sprint v. olympic is the general strength of the field. An olympic, like a 10k, tends to have a field made almost totally of solid, experience athletes. Not everyone is lightning fast, but there won't be many if any freaking swimmers or walkers. A sprint can feel a lot more "friendly" in that regard.

Elizabeth,

Thanks for the support. Patience, or lack thereof, is going to be an ongoing problem for me. I just didn't think it would rear its ugly head on the second day. An athlete friend of mine suggested on concentrating on swimming and biking over the winter to build my legs up before subjecting my knees to the pounding (8 surgeries). As he put it, if you stop swimming you drown, if you stop pedalling you fall over, but if you stop running you are still walking.

I want to be more patient. NOW!

Haven't been doing well this week at all guys. The head cold turned into a chest cold. And just today, it seems a stomach bug has joined the party.

Unfortunately with the past two weeks being sick, I haven't trained. And it means I'm bowing out of my second (and last) race of the season. Just not prepared for the extra mileage. So I get to start my off-season base work a bit earlier than planned.

Not concentrating on nutrition or training this week, just working on getting well. I was so close!

Feel better Kate, that's what's important right now. I'm sorry you're missing your last race, but there are always more races!

I hope you feel better soon. I know it's hard, but you really are doing yourself a huge service by allow your body time to rest and fight these bugs. It's tough to miss a race a little training, but you'll be stronger in the long run. Get well soon.

hey there

gosh i wouldn't survive in a food court either... i don't even want to think about all the good food they serve... tasty food.. not good.. let's put it like that...

sorry you got sick and miss your race.. but there will be plenty more next week... get well soon!!

gosh i'm bored to death here at work... usually i get to leave around 7:30pm but today no one except for me is left here so i have to stay an hour longer... sucks cuz i was supposed to meet some friends for tonight's run at 8:30... and i really need someone to run with tonight... so hopefully they'll figure i'm still at work and wait for me...

earlier on my 2nd shift here (i work from 8:45am - 14:30 and then again from 17:00 - 20:30) i was talking to my friend from home on the phone... she had called so no big deal.. no costs for the school and the phone's got that nice little feature that tells you when there is another incomming call... what's it called again? my brain won't function anymore tonight...

so anyways... the ladies from the other office complained and said someone had called their phone cuz he couldn´t call mine and that i need to get off that phone... bla bla their phone didn't even ring.. i was close to say the evil "B"word lol

so anyways... i got off the phone and now i'm sitting here doing nothing and more of nothing... hope i won't fall asleep

hello? anybody out there? i've had such a great run tonight and i just had to share it!! hehe sorry... bragging stinks but right now i feel so great about myself... i could really get used to that feeling..

today was the first day that i had to add running minutes and take away walking minutes... so i did 6 mins of running and 4 or walking (3 times each) and i thought it would really be hard and i'd struggle but it was EASY!!

i went really slow... i guess a little slower than when i run with my danish soccer chicks (one of them used to play for the danish youth national team!! and they're really good trained) but all i cared about was run for 6 minutes straight... and i did it!! i even went a little faster for the last like half minute cuz i felt like i could do it..

i wasn't too exhausted after the run... actually less than when i started with the 5/5 run/walk almost two weeks ago... so i'm really making progress... today was the first day when i had the feeling that i really could become an athlete...

the 5/5 was fine, but i was always scared of what's gonna happen when i have to add running minutes.. i wasn't sure if i could do it.. now after the run i feel like i could have pushed a little harder, but i guess i did the right thing.. i know better for next time...

alright enough about that it's almost bedtime... talk to you guys tomorrow!!

Kathie, you're a complete star!!!

Keep it up! You're an athlete in your mind, and that's the hardest bit to convince! Once you have your mind sorted, your legs are going to co-operate, count on it!

You go girl!

well I am working on more positive self-talk. So I will try to incorporate something in there to remind myself that I am looking better than before.

Thanks.

okay -

but uhhmm, I will also need some help from single parents (hellooooo?).

My schedule won't be as full as most others, AND I probably am not utilizing it the fullest as far as exercising and the other logs.

With that...Gimme a few clicks and I will change it to public

------------

okay I looked around and I don't remember HOW to change my logs to public. I saw it once and now that I WANT to change it, I forgot how.

It's in the part where you edit your control panel... the first icon under the "Quick Links" up near the calendar in your log. There is a check box right at the top of that page ...

Congratulations Kathie. I can only imagine how good it must feel to notice progress like that. i just finished my second workout. It is sort of like hitting myself in the head with a hammer. It feels so good when I stop.

Wow! Today has been quite a day for everyone...

Kathie - congratulations on your GREAT run!

Kate - take care of your self, get lots of rest, and other motherly advice. Don't worry about the training, you will be able to get going again once you have recovered from your cold.

John - you will definitely have plenty of time to make up your mind while you build up your base over the winter... I love your comments about swimming and biking versus walking... good words to remember

ES - I would find it excruciating to be surrounded by all of the smells in the food court... I agree that food courts must be an official ring in Dante's Inferno!

As for me... my luggage finally arrived at my hotel... five hours after I arrived. Mind you, in Detroit my arrival gate was right next to my departure gate... yet my luggage didn't make the transfer in time??? Detroit is the airport from he!!... I don't believe I have ever made it through there without some sort of glitch! Oh well, at least I, and my luggage, did arrive safely in DC...

Food... I am really pleased that I have not caved to my achilles heal thus far... the room service desert menu had been calling for me like Homer's Sirens... New York style cheesecake... but, I have stuck to my plan (and this group has helped me to do this), and soon I will be hitting the hay, and the sweets will be a distant memory.

Great to catch up with everyone! To all who are struggling today... hang in there, because tomorrow is another day!
