Precipitation
Total Time = 5h 26m 52s
Overall Rank = 30/127
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/16
Pre-race routine:

Normal routine. Liquid breakfast 3 hr prior. Sipped water and had a gel after.

This was my first HIM so anxiety was high.
Event warmup:

None, really.
Swim
  • 39m 24s
  • 2110 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Found out after the race that the buoys (which were moored in 100 ft of water) came loose and were drifting during the swim. General concensus is that the distance was significantly greater than 1.2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Navigate better I guess but this was a pretty solid performance for me.
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Walked up the '100 steps' from the lake to T1 to stay in a reasonable HR zone during transition.
What would you do differently?:

Scurry a bit faster.
Bike
  • 2h 51m 28s
  • 54.75 miles
  • 19.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Tossed off my chain at one pt, but didn't panic and got going quickly.
What would you do differently?:

I would have dressed differently. This was a 'tweener' day as it was 55 degrees and breezy. I went with normal tri attire and got a bit cold in the hands/arms and especially feet. Toes were numb by the time I hit the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

This T went OK, but I think I lollygagged a bit. Toes were frozen, hands were cold.
What would you do differently?:

Not really sure. Pick up the pace, I guess.
Run
  • 1h 51m 25s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Out and back is nice as I got to see how many folks were ahead of me and if I had a chance of catching any.

Run was great for 9 miles, then the wheels fell off a bit and I faded to a slow pace till the end. Still a pretty decent run for my first HIM.
What would you do differently?:

Stay focused a bit more. Fuel more on the bike perhaps.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around in the rain for a bit, but was FROZEN. Headed to the truck for dry clothes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stiff breeze on the bike. Moving buoys on the swim. Out of gas on the run.

Event comments:

ONE portabiff in the transition area sums it up. Moving bouys on the swim sucked. No medal...downright criminal.

wow... you did your report already.. im too tahrd to do mine.. prolly do it in a few daze... once I reassemble my parts... you did quite well.. i came in 1/2 hr later.. the bike got me on this race .. I did 18.5-19 in training.. so go figure.. i think the winds really impacted me quite a bit .. those winds were horrible... and yah those bouys were a trip.. prolly 1.5 miles is my guess.. last year that say it wa s a mile.. so I dunno... pretty lousy for not having a medal.. where did the $110 bucks god only knows.. I wont do it again.. at least not until I do a few other ones.. this race is pretty good to guage yourself.. but the organization sucked , the measurements was off ( the swim) and the flop was terrible... except for one thing.. those hot dogs were the best hot dogs I have ever had.. course it was the first thing I ate after finishing.. doh!! Sorrry I missed you.. ill post pics later this week so next time you can know who I am ... nice going.. i knew you would beat me .. your a tad bit faster then me...

according to my motionbased.com measures.. this was the weather metrics.  I think the wind was a bit higher then these reported.

Weather DataAverageLowHigh
Temperature (°F)53.451.855.4
Relative Humidity (%)71.771.571.9

Great race!

I did it as well and finished 1 hr and 15 minutes behind you. The wind just destroyed me and the swim left me pretty confused as my time was really slow.

I agree... $110??? I didn't know there were hot dogs either, and I'd think they could have purchase a 2-4 extra buoys to help with the navigation. I was all over the place.

Thanks folks!

Swim didn't seem all that bad at the time, but my observers watched the shape of the swim course change as the buoys drifted and weren't all that pleased about it. Wouldn't have been bad but the course got longer, not shorter.

I just could seem to get the 'ol legs warmed up on the bike.

Run was a slog through the mist/wind. I think the chill was worse than heat on the bike, but better than the heat on the run so I gotta take what I was given and go from there.

Congratulations, Jeff!

Excellent times for your first 70.3! The organization by this group left a bit to be desired, but it's always fun to be out competing anyway.

On Saturday, the swim was long, the bike and run were short. In this day and age of GPS, it wouldn't seem to be too tough to advertise the right distances...

Oh, and the hot dogs were very good!

See you next year!?

Thx Jon.

On Sunday, the organizer mentioned that the GPS that was used to place the buoys on Saturday was lost in the lake.

Long course bike was ~55 mi's on my computer. Not sure about the run as I'm not GPS'd.

Long course was just that 'long course'...not a certified HIM.

Yep, it's definitely fun to be competing.
