3M Half Marathon
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 39m 18s
Overall Rank = 454/5167
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 51/316
Pre-race routine:

Up early with Kim, quick breakfast of toast and coffee then off to the race. It's a point to point, so we warmed up (it was CHILLY at the start until the sun came out), put our gear bags on the bus that would meet us there and lined up. I drifted to the 1:45 group and Kim started with the 2hr group.
Event warmup:

Very short little jog. Should have done more, perhaps, but we treated this as our long run for the week, not so much a race.
Run
  • 1h 39m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Started with the idea of breaking 1:50, but was running loose and easy, so I pushed the pace up a little. Cool, downhill and wind at my back - plus bagpipes on course! About mile one I thought, "What the heck, I'll just race it and see." Just went with what felt an easy hard pace and held on through the finish. Very happy with the result and, more, how good it felt running. Second fastest HM, unexpectedly but happily.
What would you do differently?:

Not take 2 years off between training blocks. Otherwise, good.
Post race
Warm down:

Wait for Kim at the finish, grab water/snacks and head to the beer tent. We stayed there for a WHILE chatting and sampling some of Austin's finest brews (OK, heavily sampling). Gorgeous day! Then hopped a shuttle back to the start and spent the day with the kids. Awesome....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well, this was way faster than expected, so not much.

Event comments:

Such a great race. Usually cool and sunny, downhill, interesting course and now with a great beer garden at the end. Very Austin and very fun.

Sounds like a great day - a solid and speedy race and fun and relaxation afterward with some refreshments and your wife.  Taking over 10 minutes off your projected time is awesome! Good times, congrats!

I love it -- "just went with what felt like an easy hard pace".  I totally get what you're saying there!  At what point did it transition from feeling easy to feeling hard?  Congrats on a well-run race!

Thanks!

Went from easy-hard to just hard around 11.5 or so.  The last mile and a half required some digging, as did the uphill finish.  Form still felt good, though - just tougher to stay on pace.

Knowing you're that close makes it easier to dig deeper than when it happens at, say, mile 2.5 (see my upcoming RR on the Austin Half).

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
