how to chose a wheel
Decide what it's for
Decide what factors are really important to you
Do a real cost benefit analysis
Decide what it's for : training or racing or both. Not all wheels are equally robust and or fast. If it's for training, you care less about fast. Understand the manufacturers crash policy especially if you are looking to spend a good amount on wheels.
What features are important for you ?
Braking is an important feature IMO and one I won't compromise on. This eliminates some of the cheaper carbon wheels on the market.
Rim width is dictated by your bike.
How important is weight for you ?
How will do you think you can handle a deep wheel ?
Different people have different opinions on what features are important to them
Do a real cost benefit analysis : if bling is important to you (nothing wrong with that ) how much are you willing to pay for that ?
If performance is important, dig into the true benefit of the wheel. There are ridiculous claims of performance improvements with some wheels. As wonderful as a Zipp NSW is, I personally can't see the cost/benefit if you put bling aside.
I personally like Hed for a quality/performance/feature/price balance but there are other good wheels out there.
