Pre-race routine:

Bob R. picked me up at 5:15 and we arrived about 6:15. Registered and then, as luck would have it, was able to buy the exact goggles that I wanted right there at registration. How awesome is that? I've been needing a new pair and had no time to go shopping.

Event warmup:

Got in the water and discovered how cold it was. I felt sorry for those people not wearing a wetsuit. The water temp. really wasn't noticeable once the race started, though.

Swim
  • 07m 4s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had an awful start. They put the aquavelos in with the women 45 and over. So I got sandwiched between some big men and couldn't get around them. I didn't let myself panic although I completely understand why people do.

Speaking of panicking, a woman in the wave ahead got about 100 yards out and then kept treading water in place. Each time she'd try to start swimming, she'd stop after two strokes. They eventually pulled her out and I think she was taken away in an ambulance.

I swam the exact same split to the very second as I did last year. So I guess that is good considering that I felt I had a terrible start.

What would you do differently?:

Start in front.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

I did not wear socks for the bike. That was a last minute decision (and a good one).

Bike
  • 40m 31s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 18.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt like I was flying (and later discovered that I've gone faster in the past). Oh well.

After the turnaround, Stacey passed me like I was standing still even though I was going at least 18 mph. I was actually relieved because I knew she was coming and it was good to get the pass over with.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I biked as fast as I could.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Run
  • 25m 23s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt fairly comfortable the entire way. For some reason, I can't run as fast as I used to be able to. The speed in which I'm getting slower is really picking up!
Post race
Warm down:

The best part of the race was afterwards. I won the wetsuit at the award ceremony. Funny thing, I commented to Bob on the way to the race that I hoped that I'd win the wetsuit. I needed a new sleeveless one. I couldn't believe it when they called out my number.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Old age. I say that now but in 10 years, I will think that I used to be "young" at 62.

Event comments:

Nice season opener!

I smiled a lot while reading that race report and knowing the past. Congratulations!

Not bad for a lady with a 'device'.

Keep up the good work.
