Overcast
Total Time = 1h 17m 26s
Overall Rank = 51/215
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/34
Pre-race routine:

Woke up. Ate PB toast and banana...just like every other training day. Im getting sick of eating the same freiking this. I need to change breakfast up!
Event warmup:

I was the third bike in the transition area. Got a good spot. I got there at 5:20...way too early. Could wait till 6:00 and still get a good spot. Say some other BTers before the race: Dan, Zev, Rob, Scott, Ken and Curtis before the race. Bathroom about 3 times.
Swim
  • 12m 54s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Took forever to get started. I think they were behind schedule about 45 minutes. Got in the lane with Rob and some others. Swimming is definitely my toughest part. Considering I just learned how to swim only 12 weeks ago, I was very happy to be in the 10 minute heat. I swam OK. Got worked up breathing. Once I settled myself down I did OK. Rob and I are convinced, this one chick in our heat got away with only 9 laps.
What would you do differently?:

Next year I will be in the 8 minute heat...ALOT of practice this winter!
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
What would you do differently?:

Had a little difficulty getting bike shoes on. I have 3 straps per shoe, they kept closing up on me when I tried to get my foot in. Probably lost 15 seconds here. I may learn how to get put them on my bike and slip in.
Bike
  • 37m 19s
  • 12.68 miles
  • 20.39 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt the best on my bike. I was passed by only one person...Ken, he was flying. I had no one to pace with so I rode all by myself. Probably passed 10-12 people. Had some wind going out, tailwind coming back. Felt good coming into T2
What would you do differently?:

I had some flat parts I felt I could had dug harder...just more practice needed.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Nice T2...nothing to report.
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 25m 11s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

My calves were rock hard for the 1st mile. I felt like I was running with locked knees. My first mile was very slow around 9:30. After a mile they loosened up and I felt great. Nobody passed me on the run, I passed about 10 people. Again, I had no one to pace with, it was like I was training alone. I think it is nice to have someone to pace with and push each other. Ran pretty well the last 2 miles. WIthout the calf issues, I think I could have shaved another minute off.
What would you do differently?:

Since swim is my weakest link, I spent alot of time in the pool, I need to run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Water...I can not drink water on the course, messes with my stomach, so I pound it after a workout or event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have swam better of I could have stayed more calm in the pool. I need to worry about my swim not what is going on around me or in my lane.

Event comments:

Great race. This being my second tri and first pool swim, I definitely prefer OWS to pool. Nice event and venue overall. I will consider this one for next year. Nice to see other Bters and hang out afterwards.

My wife was going to bring our 3 kids out to watch, but my middle boy was sick with the Croup. Thanks Babe for taking care of him all night so I could rest for my race!

Again, this race is dedicated to our baby daughter Pearl we lost this summer! Miss you tons!

Great race. Looking forward to training some in the off season. (If we train hard all winter is it really an off-season???) I'm now already psyched for next year.

Sweet! You were top 10 in your AG! You rock, Josh!  Let's work on your swimming together this winter!

BTW-Laura's lack of sleep did not prevent her from kickin' my butt on our run! She really is my inspiration!

Nice job Josh! Looks like you performed a helluva lot better than our Fighting Illini did over the weekend! Keep at it and all those times will keep coming down.
