Urine is sterile when it exists the body, but it can become contaminated by bacteria on the body during it's exit. And once it is exposed to air, it's no longer sterile either.
However, you shouldn't get a UTI from on yourself.

Just dirty looks from those riding behind you

FYI, she's not talking about UTIs. Women have to worry about---GROSS-OUT WARNING---yeast infections when their parts are subjected to a damp, bacteria-laden environment for extended periods of time. It doesn't matter whether it's sweat, gatorade, ocean water, or urine.

Right.  The point some of us are trying to make is that you're going to be drenched in sweat, sports drinks, etc. throughout the race anyway.  A little urine isn't going to make much of a difference.

The only time I found using the bathroom an advantage was (and has been) during an IM distance race...

  • ..let's see... the wind was a steady 20+ mph with gusts hitting 40+ mphs VERY frequent...

  • .. stopping for a bathroom break could put my ability to make any one the 1 of 3 bike cut off times in serious jeoparity (it was a loop bike course with each loop having a cut off time).

  • .. when it comes to IM distances... priorities take a sudden change from what you would normally consider as a reasonable option.

  • .. do enough IM's and you get the hang of going to the bathroom on the bike.... Or, you could practice...but, then that would be just weird... :-)

Aid stations have porta-potties (even the volunteers have to pee). On the bike, there usually is one every 12-15 miles or so....don't pee in your pants unless you are contending for podium spot....this is supposed to be fun....

When I first read this read... I thought some people were being sarcastic about peeing on the bike... however, I realize that my naivety has gotten the best of me. I guess since my first Tri season I had no chance in H3ll of any podium... stopping to pee (in a toilet no less) was the least of my worries. Besides, my first Tri, my trips to the loo were for reasons grosser than pee.

Anyhoo, my (shorts) off to all of you who are intense enough to pee on yourself on the bike. For that, you deserve a medal (no sarcasm intended, really).

I must ask though... I don't think there is much chance of a UTI from this activity... don't you get an itchy rash from pee... I am picturing diaper rash and I don't know why. I guess your shorts are wet from the swim anyway... I just envision a stinging rash from pee on me.

So you don't consider peeing in your pants to be fun?

Note to self: may not be fun for others...

I'm as naive as you! I was not aware of how many people were doing this... It seems to be like 95% of triathletes! That's A LOT. Like you I don't see the point of not stopping. I'm racing against myself - not others.

As for UTI it was not that kind of infection I was talking about - but yeast infection. But that's true that trisuit beeing wet women probably gets yeast infection more easily. But my skinsuit dries very fast so I'm not too worried about the water. But I'm certainly not going to be comfortable with urine in my trisuit...

Anyway like everybody says NOTHING new on race day - so no pee in my pants on race day!

How many people who have replied to this thread have actually done what they are recommending?

I use the portapotty. With my times (for non-log checkers, I'll just tell you, I'm slow), a potty break actually speeds me up.

Once again, I will be riding the course after with  you.   20 laps and therefore 20 chances to stop and use the various porta-potties on the track.  Stop, take your time, and you will have fresher legs after the fact.

    Just my $0.02

I don't want to scare you but from what I read so far there will be other cyclists on the track peeing in their pants! LOL You are probably right - there is porta-potties on the track. This post turned really interesting. I NEVER thought there was so many people peeing on themself. WOW If I become a superfast triathlete I will have to learn how to do it!

Keep in mind these people are talking about long tris.  probably 1/2 or full.  I think most people can hold it for a couple of hours.

Well, I did stop off once at a Starbuck's to pee during an Oly.

    Really.

That was cause for a serious reprimand in the BT camp after the race.  Three dear BTers who had apparently mastered the art peeing on themselves (hi Comet!) were incredulous that I would waste those precious moments jogging past the barrista in my cleats and risk not making my goal time.  But KNOWING that I wasn't about to pee on myself, and with the bladder situation causing great discomfort, I figured it would be easier to visit that nice clean Starbuck's than to wait for a nasty portapotty in T2.  I did indeed finish that lap faster, and beat my goal time by 12 minutes.

Besides, it's not like I ordered a latte or anything.

I did it at my last Sprint in Temple. Had extra water bottles on bike due to heat and just rinsed off on the fly. It wasnt anything at all to do that. I wonder what percentage of your urine on race day is urine and what percentage is water from all the pre race hydration. Probably not very much if your well hydrated your urine should be somewhat clear anyway. So I cant see what harm it is. I guess soldiers in the army using MOPP suits for more than 24hrs have a problem. Since I got the Tshirt on that one. I am not aware that female soldiers aren't allowed to deficate or urinate inside their MOPP suits. By the way these suits are used in Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical contaminated environments. Never heard of female soldiers that trained with them getting infections since my wife is ex army as well. Just a thought since very few on this site appeared to have served.

I've mastered the pee while running technique but this weekend at the Cancun 70.3 I'll try my best to let it fly while riding my bike (my previous attempts at FL 70.3 & Timberman 70.3 failed!) I’ll post the results on my RR
