New Basin Blues Running Club
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 20m 59s
Overall Rank = 8/19
Age Group = M 50+
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

This was a first-ever "grass roots" race put on by my running club as a part of its first-ever "grand prix" style race series.
Event warmup:

Short warmup. This was as much a test of my recovery from injuries to both hamstrings as it was a race. Everything felt good for first time in awhile.
Run
  • 20m 59s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

This was mostly faster runners from among the New Basin Blues club membership (race was free for members). One guy in my AG (50-59) is ridiculously fast on the roads, so I was competing for 2nd (another guy my age who runs right at my pace injured himself this week and scratched). I'm way, way, undertrained for this distance at this point after nursing right hamstring injury all year. I'm fit for ultras, but not for 5Ks, ironically. However, I was expecting to run ~22:00 and I beat that by a minute, so that was a good sign. And didn't aggravate either hammie, despite going more-or-less full out.
What would you do differently?:

Not be limited on speed work by multiple hamstring injuries.
Post race
Warm down:

Short warmdown jog. Happy to come off it with no injury, esp after blowing up left hammie at 25K a week ago.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training for speed this year due to injury.

Event comments:

This was really more of a beta test than a fully mounted race. Next year...if the club decides to pursue a second go-round...it will be better publicized and supported.
