Subject: USAT question
Is anyone a USAT member? Is it worth it to join for the year? Thank you!

I'm an annual member. This is a debate that comes up a lot, and the answer to "is it worth it?" is highly dependent on what you do with it.

Here are some pros: you are supporting the governing body of the sport; lots of discounts (I just saved 25% on 2XU tights for the winter, a savings of $28); eligible for national rankings; you come out ahead if you do at least 4 races. You also get a magazine, which is okay.

I typically don't do 4 races (this year, I did 3, so an annual membership was $5 more than one day licenses), but I like to support the organization. I also use the discounts when I can, so from a purely dollars saved aspect, I do come out ahead. I don't care about national rankings, but I did qualify for nationals, and you have to be a member to compete. Nationals was a great race. The membership is worth it to me, but I can easily see why it wouldn't be to someone else.

If you are going to be competing in triathlon you should be a member of USAT

I usually do enough races to make it worth it.

I have a multi year membership. This year was the first year I didn't do four races. I also take advantage of the discounts. I like to follow my national and state standing to compare seasons.

I didn't join for a while and i'm not really sure why, I think just my normal curmudgeonliness against joining anything. I'm not sure what races you all do but it seems like it's worth it if you do more than one race a year on the normal ones I do. Then you get the discounts and everything (which I haven't taken advantage of yet). I don't really understand what being a member actually does (aside from checking the "I'm a member" box on a race sign up and not paying the extra money for the one day membership) I assumed it was some insurance thing.

Also if you plan on doing anything outside the country there can be weird rules about 1 day memberships (in France a one day membership requires a check up from a french doctor which is a real pain to schedule), so if you're gonna go international I'd say definitely get USAT membership.

The insurance thing isn't really accurate. If a race is USAT sanctioned, it has insurance. You are covered whether you're an annual member or you purchase a one day license.

Interesting about France. Pretty much eliminates the already remote chance I'd do a race there . . .

You may want to reconsider. IM France is my favorite bike ride of any kind I've ever been on, IM or otherwise. Not to mention all the other rides you can take around there. Highly recommend the ride from Nice to Monaco along the water.

Marathon's not so great however
