Rod...congrats on a successful race!!! Great race report too!

Wind, ice, snow, & cold here in the states; came home to several inches of snow following some time visiting with family; only “training” for the past 2 weeks is walks. Hope to get a swim in tomorrow am.

Forgot to circle back here to report that I DID it! My first Tri (sprint) is over and done, and I'm not sure if I'll ever do that again

My swim was definitely my strongest phase of the 3 - 6:48 for a 400m open water and I felt like I could have circled back and done that 3 more times instead of continuing to the bike and run ha
My transitions were both very slow, as I was careful in putting my socks & shoes on after the swim to make sure I didn't get any bumps that would cause blisters, and after the bike I was moving slow to transition to the dreaded run.
Bike took a lot longer than expected, it was much hillier than expected and very windy so survival was my main focus. 20k took me 1hr 1 min :/ If I were to do this again I would want to rent a road-bike for the occasion (used my hybrid - very mountain-y), as I know that would have helped things - mine is pretty heavy and clunky.
Lastly, the 5k run was definitely more of a walk with a few jogs in it. I was hosed by the end so I just kept thinking about being done more than going fast. I just wanted to finish.

I didn't have a time goal in mind, again, my only goal was to complete it without stopping, and I DID! So I'm happy, even with my time of 2 hours and 3 seconds. If only I could have finished 4 seconds faster to say I did it under two hours!! hahah

But thank you guys for the tips and encouragement. I lurked here for months, not really posting much, but it helped immensely!

Thanks!
Nina

Nina..... congratulations on a successful Tri!!! From your description you were fantastic; the first one is always a learning experience. Hopefully you’ll take up the challenge again sometime in the future.

Such a satisfying feeling after accomplishing something like this!

Well done Nina,

You now have a baseline and a goal to beat 2 hours in your next race.

Well....while I can still swim; use bike trainer and do some light lifting I’m now on “injured reserve” for my walking activities. It seems arthritis has developed in my right hip and symptoms also indicate the possibility of a torn labrum.

Ortho has put me on rest from power walking; band exercises for my hip; and anti inflammatory prescription for 2 weeks; then back for an assessment. So this is starting down the same road as my knees took. If these first conservative steps don’t produce results then on to a hip injection.

Actually got on the trainer for the first time in ages this am; not too long and minimal resistance; went ok.

So....as a BD card I once saw said....”Getting old is like scuba diving.....some time it sucks and sometimes it blows”!!!

How true!

That's no good at all. Did it get worse in the colder weather?

May have to expand your user name to 2NewKnees1NewHip

LOL!! While that could come to pass I’m hoping it’ll be a long while before having a hip replaced!!

Cold weather really hasn’t played a part in the symptoms. Same regardless of temps.

Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year!!!!

I see this the 2018 forum will soon be moved to archives....

Hip condition saga continues; will have an injection next Wednesday am. Depending on outcome over next few weeks there may be a referral to a Hip Preservation Specialist in Chicago. So it’s a process of elimination.

Have a great 2019!!!!
