Subject: Entry Level Road BIke?
My friend's son outgrew his road bike, 2015 Trek 1.1. I know this is just a base level bike. I currently have a Jamis Allegro hybrid and did my first sprint tri on it two years ago. I'm out of shape, but I know I have the desire to get back to my old conditioning. I have my eyes set on a sprint tri this fall and I'm currently training for a 10k to get the body used to do some work. I kept adjusting on my hybrid seat to have me sit as if I were on a road bike. It was more comfortable that way for me. Should I pull the trigger and snag it or keep saving for an upgraded model? I doubt it's going to improve my time over the hybrid, but I feel like I may be more comfortable on it.

What's your experience folks? Wish you hadn't bothered and went for upgraded bike or was totally pleased and rode it for a while?

PS - Price $250 and that was quite a bit less than what I paid on my hybrid used. Both are in mint condition. I'm keeping the hybrid because I want to bike with my husband.

Does the bike fit you?

If it does, it's worth further consideration.

Do you have clipless pedals on your hybrid?

As you migrate from regular shoes to clipless pedals, would you rather fall over a few times on a $250 "entry level" bike or a $5000 "high end" one?

If the bike fits, you'll get some immediate benefits from the thinner tires, better position, and lower weight of that entry level bike.

You'll probably get more benefits going from the hybrid to an entry level road bike than from an entry level road bike to a high end road bike of equal fit.

Psst...post pictures of it after you buy it!

It's a perfect fit for me. I'm so short I lucked out that her kid hit a growth spurt. I have clipless pedals on my hybrid and shoes. I even upgraded my seat so all those goodies were going to be moved over.

PS - I fell twice because my partner stopped so fast I couldn't get unclipped in time. #rookie

I'm going to get tomorrow. I'll get a pic posted. It's red....and shiny.

An entry level road bike will be faster than your hybrid. Once you get it, consider a professional bike fit or, failing that, use one of the online tools to get yourself set up right. Getting your position right will make you faster and more comfortable.

For that price, go for it. Even if you decide to upgrade a year later. . . it still works out for you. I believe those bikes go for 600-700 new. My first bike was a 2010 Trek 1.1 and I raced it a few times before upgrading. If it were a new bike, I would recommend spending a bit more and getting more bike. . . but used for $250. . . so long as it's not worn badly (and that's possible if a kid was using it) it's a good deal.

For $250, you can buy the bike, ride it for a while and if you don't like it, sell it for the same or slightly more. It's a pretty low risk deal...

The Trek 1.1 is a decent bike. Nothing fancy, but it works. It should be quite a bit faster (and easier to ride) than your hybrid.
