Pre-race routine:

This was a major benchmark for my recovery from lower back/groin injury on 12/30. Felt as healthy as could be expected going into the day and ready to try a max race effort.

This race is a highlight of my running club's racing year...we had 20 members entered, including 4 teams of 4 for the team competition (I was on the club's Grand Master Division team). Was able to carpool the 50 mile drive with three other members.
Event warmup:

Did a lot of stretching and striders and a 1/4 mile warmup run. Other than some fatigue in lower back, felt okay.

Comments:

Started too far back in the pack and had to elbow my way up...probably didn't lose more than a second or two in the process, though. Kept waiting for injury to blow up, but it never did...felt some tightness around 2 miles and backed off slightly, but that was all.

Spent most of the race within spitting distance of another member of my club Grand Master team and felt like I could take him at the end. Reeled him in with less than 1/4 mile to go and thought I had him, but he surprised me by out-kicking me to the line. The reality was, though, that he started behind me and his chip time was going to beat mine even if I'd held him off.
What would you do differently?:

Start up at the front with other teammates.

This was a lifetime PR for a well-measured 8K course.
Post race
Warm down:

After walking through the huge food court and grazing just a bit, I went for an easy jog with two women from my club.

Club Grand Master team took 2nd in the division for the second year in a row. I was 3rd of the 4 scoring runners for the club...the first three of us were grouped within a 7 second spread and the 4th guy was only 40 seconds behind me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fighting through the pack at the start. Apprehension over possibly blowing up injury with only 7 weeks to Boston. Notwithstanding that, this was a PR for 8K or 5 miles.

Event comments:

This is a huge and extremely well-run (USATF sanctioned) road race. Post-race food is amazing. Big team competition attracts a lot of very fast runners.
