Subject: Numbing cream “down there”?
Hey all- i had an interesting thought as I was on my bike on the trainer for a couple hours the other day. Has anyone tried using a numbing cream like bio freeze in the general crotch area for their base period long rides? It seems like it would help with the pressure while building mileage and getting the body used to long rides again. To be clear, I’m not talking about using it for saddle sores or friction, simply for the pain/pressure on the saddle. Thoughts?

Your body experiences pain for a reason - to keep you from really hurting yourself.  You'll acclimate to the discomfort that comes from longer and longer rides.  If that discomfort isn't subsiding, there may be other things going on - an improper fit, maybe a different saddles, etc.  Masking the pain would cover what could otherwise be valuable insight to a looming problem.

I'm not sure what pain/pressure you are experiencing, but that sounds like an issue you should look into? Many of us run into the numbing issue but getting out of the saddle often if just for a few seconds tends to help solve that.

I wouldn’t call it pain. Just the normal discomfort that most feel while getting used to long hours in the saddle. I was just thinking out loud, “if we have to build up to 5-6 hours in the saddle for Ironman distance, has anyone thought about just slightly numbing that general area during the time that your body is getting used to it?” That would make the experience of building up to that time in the saddle suck a bit less.
