Every time I read a story about FB I have to chuckle! First off on 'privacy'....I have said for years that anything you post on Facebook is public domain. If you don't want the world to 'see you', don't post on FB. If you don't care if the worlds sees you, post on FB.

It's all one big conspiracy to get my money anyway! If I do a search for "Hayward Pool Pumps" within hours I see FB ads for Pool pumps! This is how FB and Google make money. That is how FB makes money. It's not just FB, it's Google and Amazon too! I have no problem at all with this. I'd much rather see ads for pool pumps if I am shopping for pool pump than ads for something like feminine hygiene products.

What Cambridge Analytica did was brilliant IMO. Supposedly they used FB profiles to develop techniques for influencing voters.

They had a hidden camera of CA execs saying they could use their system to broadcast phony political corruption events which they staged themselves. This is not brilliant, this is corrupt.

OK, brilliantly corrupt. Actually, I don't see corruption. "Cambridge Analytica is a privately held company that combines data mining and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process." This is what they do for a living.

What is different about CA doing what is done on a daily basis on Twitter?  Twitter is full of misleading information, and frequently outright lies.  There is practically an entire generation who get their news almost exclusively from that venue.....of course there are others in social media.  Of course the people propagating BS on twitter are not a company, but the results are the same.....is Twitter corrupt?  Is the platform?

Everybody seems to love the "information age".......I say wallow in it.

Same can be said of MSNBC, CNN....and yes, even Fox. Anyone can say or write anything they want and call it news. I read an article yesterday on Yahoo news that stated factually that "Trump is wrong about the Mueller investigation being a witch hunt". That is not factual, it is someone opinion. Just as Trump's assertion the investigation is a witch hunt is an opinion.

I think people just need to wise up and think! And decide for themselves if the 'news' - from whatever source - is reliable, factual, opinions or lies. Even a cow has the good sense to eat only the good hay and spit out the sticks.

I was on the debate team in college and had to do our research on a variety of current events and cite our sources on note cards. The research was done in the library by reading magazines and journals. Now all you have to do is Ask Siri! I'd like to see how college debate are conducted now with all the information in the world just a few keystrokes away. And you can prove anything pro or con with the internet!

Spreading knowingly false and manufactured information for the purpose of swaying election results. Ok, maybe not illegal but entirely unethical. Fox, MSNBC, CNN et al do have the FCC looking over their shoulders so they are somewhat guarded in what they can say on air. CA manufacturing stuff for public consumption and using FB data to conduct targeted release of this information, doesn't anyone have any ethics anymore? Jeez.

No, they really don't.  Ethics are for people who get caught.  Apparently, everything else is OK.   In reading Twitter, because it's part of what we do, follow certain accounts, it is beyond obvious that intentional lies are put forth on a daily basis.....and the masses of idiots who use the platform eat it up.  It's no wonder a company like CA can be successful targeting and swaying election results......the electorate is dumb as a box of forking rocks and believes whatever it reads.

Not really, you will notice that they do print the source of any factual information that they site in those TV adds. Now is it an accurate betrayal of what was originally reported... This is why we have fact-checking websites like Snopes and Politifact, but that is only for the stuff that is obviously attributable to reputable information sources. I'm with Lefty, anyone who instantly believes what comes off Twitter, or FB or Snapchat, gotta be a fool. Then again 50% of our population has below average intelligence.

Umm, did they post the dossier on the web and allow it to spread? Nope. Also, much of that dossier has not been proven false. You can look for equivalency here but it is tough to find.

No, they gave it to the FBI who used it as an excuse to spy on the Trump campaign! Worse than Watergate!
