Subject: 70.3 Bike Course Bottles
I will be racing gulf coast 70.3 in 6 weeks. I have a question about the bottles on the course. Are the Gatorade and water bottles normal plastic bottles instead of bike bottles? If so, does anyone have a recommendation on cheaper bottle cages that do a good job at holding onto these? Thanks!

Different races have different bottles - at least for water and some of them will be way too loose in a bottle cage. I switched from a normal BTA cage which I would put handup water bottles in to an Xlab torpedo bottle that I refill from handups because of this issue. I put all my calories in a behind the seat bottle (about 800 kcal of infinit for a 70.3)

I use a Profile Design Aerodrink setup between the bars. There's a cap on top that allows you to take the course water bottle, squeeze the contents in and discard the bottle before you leave the aid station area. The other bottle I have on the bike holds liquid containing some calories and electrolytes. I don't dare try to put course supplied bottles in the cages as you don't know if they'll fit.

They are sport top bottles that fit right into your cage. I have a water bottle in one cage and leave the other one open so that as I roll through the stations I just grab either a Gatorade or a water and toss the previous one to the side. It’s really a great set up! You don’t need to pack down your bike with a lot of extras.

I like my speedfil frame mounted drink system. Open cap allows me to squirt water or whatever into the top and ditch the bottle before I pass the end of the aid station.

I also use bottle cages on the back of the seat. Start with bottles I toss at aid stations when empty and grab the bottles from the aid station. They usually fit pretty snug unless you hit bumps or train tracks.
