Pre-race routine:

Pre-race was rushed to say the least. Pulled the bike off the back of jeep. Felt up my tires and decided the rear could use a little air; pump, pump, pump,
psssssss. Pin hole right along the centerline of tire near the valve. Quick decision to remove tire, put in some stans and reseat the tire. (oh yeah running a disk so I had to take tire off wheel to add sealant.) So, tire back on, reinflate and at about 110 psi; psssssssss. So, I take it back off, mount my spare, which is a really heavy vittoria rally, by the way, pump it up to 120 and head off to transition, with about 10-15 min to set up. Lay gear out quick like, roll up what had been race tire, and tape it up under my seat, get body marked and off to swim practice, just as transition closes
Event warmup:

Not much, due to aforementioned bike issues. Did get a quick 100 or so swim warmup before everyone had to get out of water. I was last one out, BTW.
Swim
  • 18m 2s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 15s / 100 meters
Comments:

Honestly, swimming is not my forte. I swam a relatively solid race. Navigation was on. Pace felt pretty steady throughout. I am just not fast. Dropped 4 min to guy who finished 1st in AG; dropped 2 min to guy that finished 2nd.
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect, I probably could have pushed it a little harder, but like I said...I'm just not real fast
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Worked T1 like it was a long course triathlon; slow and steady, and managed to get some fuel and water in before heading out on bike course
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 48m 23s
  • 18.3 miles
  • 22.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Real solid bike with consistent cadence and power. Started to rain pretty hard on the way back in. Wet roads combined with the fact that course was not closed made for some interesting moments trying to get around traffic that was backed up behind some fast swimmer/slow riders...
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have bumped the power up by about 5-10 watts and still maintained consistency.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Again, worked transition more like I was racing long course. Slow and steady. Remembered not to forget bib like I did in this race last year
What would you do differently?:

Face the opposite direction so fans couldn't claim later on that I was ignoring them.
Run
  • 22m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

So, this is where I blew my chance to place higher. Solid run, but I didn't really push it all that hard. Hard enough that I cramped just before 3 mi mark, but I really could have pushed it harded throughout the run.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have increased cadence a bit and ran at slightly higher avg HR
Post race
Warm down:

Beer. Lots of beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Other than the fact that I am not a very strong swimmer? I guess the rain and traffic on back half on bike.

Event comments:

Great local sprint, with a really awesome post race party. I have always enjoyed this race, even though I really prefer long-course racing. I will definitely race Louisiana Tri again, and again!
