Pre-race routine:

Since this is a very local race, I went to packet pickup at lunch on Thursday.

On race morning, I got up at 5:15 and took Zoe out, had my pre race breakfast of bagel with peanut butter, a banana and water with electorlytes. I left the house a bit after 6 and stopped at Sheetz for some coffee on my way to the race. As I left Sheetz, I saw the that on ramp for US1 was blocked. I went around the other way and got on US1 only to find that it was not only the ramp that was blocked, the whole road was. (http://abc11.com/traffic/us-1-reopens-after-overturned-tanker-crash-near-apex/3551063/) I cut through on some back roads and still made it to the race reasonably early and was parked by 6:40.

For this race, you park in a deck and then its' a short walk to the race area. I walked up there to get the lay of the land and use the port-a-let and then went back to my car for a few more minutes -- got my race belt, etc.
Event warmup:

Closer to the race time of 7:15, I got in line for a "final call" and then did a dynamic warm up and headed to the start area.

Comments:

I lined up near the 2:00 pace group. The first mile was fast because it was downhill. The course started off going down Lassiter Mill Road but finished with the last three quarters mill going up that same hill. Then we went through a hilly neighborhood and made our way to the Crabtree Creek Greenway. The greenway was shaded and was pleasant to run on. There were a few weird turns to cross the creek on bridges and a few times we had a hard time passing the wheelchair runners on the narrow greenway. Overall, though, this part was good.

We had a short detour on North Hills drive due to a section of the greenway being closed. This was not my favorite because they went and found some more hills!

My parents were watching along the greenway sort of near their house. Since it was an out and back section, I saw them twice! Shortly after the first time I passed my parents, as we approached the first turnaround, the greenway got fairly congested because the race leaders were coming back (while we were still going out). Also in this section, there were a few entertainment things to keep us pumped up -- a drum group and a DJ. They had cool towels for people at the turnaround.

Shortly after the turnaround -- near mile 7 -- I started to get calf cramps. I just tried to manage them when I felt them coming on. Fortunately, full Charlie horse did not occur until after that race.

Other than the angry calf muscles, and the hill awaiting us at the end, the second half of the race was uneventful.

I didn't quite make my time goal or the goal of really tackling the hill at the end.

Event comments:

Overall this was a good event. The organizers have improved it since I ran it in 2016. The announcer and music at the start/finish area was nice and I enjoyed the "five minutes" and "two minutes" recordings they had at the starting line.

I still think that a June event needs water stations every mile rather than every 2 miles.

Also, if they want people to park in the deck, they need to provide parking control for the exit. It took me over 25 minutes to leave the deck and I don't think that the shoppers who were there appreciated all of the race traffic trying to leave.

Nice job! Way to go on managing those angry calf muscles and still having a great finish.

Wow, 1st AG, how great!  You work hard at your training so it is fitting you earned that medal!  It sounds like it was good you are local to the race and knew routes around the blocked highway.  Is the squirrel on the shirt/medal a standard or does it change from year to year?  It's really neat!

Congrats again on a race well run!

Nope. It's not always a squirrel, although I think that it should be! I did this race on 2016 and it was a cardinal then (an ugly one!). I like the squirrel. Zoe approves as well!

Excellent race! Love a race that is so local that packet pickup is a lunchtime errand! Knowing the back way around when the roads were closed has to be a bonus too! Think how frazzled the out of towners were--I had several friends from MD and VA at it, in fact, one was a wheelchair racer whose race chair broke down so she used her regular wheelchair.

Excellent AG win!! Nice!
