Subject: How to jump off 12' and not get water up my nose?
I have a race this weekend that starts with a 12' jump off a ferry (Escape the Cape, NJ). I know I can just hold my nose for the jump which is what I have been doing for my entire life but I would prefer to shake this crutch. I have no problem with any other aspect of swimming but this has been an issue my entire life.

The other day I tried practicing at the pool to just exhale through my nose while jumping but this didn't improve things. Any ideas? Just tired of being a "nose holder"

Thanks

Keba

Cup your hand over your nose to avoid the immediate rush of water into you nostrils.
Basically palm on your chin, cup your fingers and hand to protect your nose.

Probably best to cup your nose with one hand and use the other to hold your arm against your torso.  If your elbow catches the water, that force will get translated straight to your chin/nose.

The other thing will be to flex your knees just a little bit with your feet flat and slightly apart.  The result is your feet aerate the water, cutting down the force into your nose.

If you are worried about the start. I would recommend you have one hand on the back straps of your goggles and the other on goggles lens. Covering your nose in the process. Break the habit another time. Love that race, see photo <——. I’ve done it multipule times so if you have any questions. The beach section of the run SUCKS ! Short but miserable.

Put your goggle straps underneath your cap, put hands over both your goggles and nose and jump in...I'm assuming this is not a dive start. Jumping from 12 feet could knock your goggles off your face which is why I suggest holding them in place. It's always a good idea to put the straps under your cap as additional protection from them getting knocked off.

Thanks for all the info. Just to clarify I'm totally comfortable jumping in, dealing with goggles, etc but want to try not to have my hand in front of my face for the race photo. I see people jumping in from crazy heights straight in without holding their nose, etc. Normally I don't care about my hand in front of my face but I guess if I want the good photo I will have to suck it up and get a little water up my nose..

I hold my nose. It works the best. All the cool kids hold their nose.
