Overall Rank = 334/1705
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 35/176
Pre-race routine:

Felt like I went into this race pretty much undertrained. I seemed to get into a bit of a training funk after IM Mont Tremblant and didn't really get out of it until about a month before race. Did a few marathons (Ms Gulf Coast & Little Rock) and my first Ultra (Red Dirt 100k) in the past few months, but never really got a lot of hard training in...
Event warmup:

As per SOP, didn't get in much of a warm-up. Stayed at friends' house in Fort Collins for the race, so by the time we drove down to Boulder, took shuttle out to the reservoir, and did last min adjustments on bike it was about time to toe the line

Comments:

Wow. Felt totally claustrophobic during first couple hundred meters. Definitely struggling to breathe. Got so bad that I pulled up and unzipped the back of my wetsuit. Once I opened up I felt much more comfortable and got into normal breathing regimen. I am sure that the drag from open suit slowed me down a bit
What would you do differently?:

Sleeveless wetsuit!!!

Bike
  • 5h 47m 49s

  • 19.32 mile/hr
Comments:

Heat, dryness and Westerly wind made for a challenging course. Felt like every bit of moisture was ripped off body making it tough to stay hydrated. Most of the course wind was hitting you at 0angles, either direct head, tail or crosswind.
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed a higher wattage during the headwind sections...
Transition 2
  • 07m 28s
Run
  • 5h 08m 43s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot and dry. Turning out of Boulder Reservoir, it was obvious that a lot of people were smoked. Looking down the road, I saw very few people actually running...I kept up a pretty solid pace right up until about mi 24. Hit the aid station and doubled over trying to vomit. After failing that, made the descent from kneeling to sitting. Thank god for the volunteer that came over, poured ice down my back and held it in place for what seemed like about 15 min. After I got the core cooled off enough, was able to get up and jog/walk the last 2ish miles out to a 12:33 finish.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to switch GPS off GLONASS and run with more ice late in race...
Post race
Warm down:

Umm. I pretty much laid in fetal position until the need to vomit arose

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was undertrained for this race, but still managed to put in a decent performance. Motivated to start training for Chattanooga now.

Event comments:

Volunteers were absolutely awesome.!!! One thing that I was less than impressed with was the welcome dinner. Hotdogs and hamburgers with a bag of chips? Really? I have come to expect more from Ironman. Also the seating for welcome ceremony was on park benches at Boulder Bandshell amphitheater. Not very conducive to meeting other competitors. Other than that it was a great race, and one that I will undoubtedly race again in the future.

??? GPS died at about mi 23. GLONASS kills battery. Lesson learned
Course: Moderately flat run that starts out with about 5 miles on road headed south from reservoir, before a series of out and backs along goose creek path and boulder creek path. Pretty exposed, with the exception of the boulder creek path portion.
