Subject: I did My first Tri..all I can do is laugh!!

Ok, My first tri was yesterday and the weather as we were driving to the venue was snowy and rainy. (the freeway had snow on it). We get there and they cancelled the swim part (which is the one thing I was looking forward to) so the race for sprint went run 1.5 miles, bike 18 miles and run the 5k. Running is not my stongest leg. I was hoping that when the run came I would be able to walk most of it. Anyways it was so... cold that my friend purchased leg warmers for the two of us and mine were WAY to big, so during the first run they were falling down so I was running trying to hold them up, finally towards the end I just let them fall around my ankles, I got off on the bike ok, when I got back to T2 I ate some glucose (diabetic), drank some water, took off helmet and too off! I forgot my race belt with number so half a block I had to turn around and go get it. Then I lost a contact and had to stop at a truck mirror to put it back in. All in All I did not come in last and I had a great time. It did hail on us a little on the bike, but it was not freezing! I am planning on training harder through the winter and doing one in May. Thanks everyone for all your help. Even though we did not do the swim am I still able to say that I am a triathlete? I have done the whole run before in a practice run.

Not only are you a triathlete, but you are an extreme, all-weather four-wheel drive triathlete with leg warmers around your ankles! That was probably fashionable once in the 1980s, I'm sure the style will come in again, mostly because of you . . .

Seriously, it sounds like you had fun with this crazy race. That's at least half the battle right there.

Congrats!

Sounds like you had quite an eventful day. You are going to do so well in your tri in May when you don't have snow (hopefully) and other conditions - leg warmers, contact, cancelled swim, etc. - to worry about.

Where do you live? I can't believe you have snow already!

Congratulations and Heck YEAH you are a triathlete!! What an outrageous story! Who would have thought that a tri in September could be so reliant on the weather! ;-0

I'd say you're a triathlete.  The weather was freakin' crazy.  It was 38 degrees at the start of the race!  I was pelted in the head by hailstones at the far side of the lake on the bike.  The 90 degree weather we had at the middle of the week would have been nice.  Congrats on just getting through it!

I have to laugh at the legwarmer story.  I thought about getting some myself, but just ended up going out in the tri shorts and a jacket.  I wondered what they would be like to run in, but it sounds like I made a good choice   Also, if you forget the number belt next time, just leave it.  You won't really get a penalty for not wearing it (I asked once, but that's another story).

Good job, and keep up the hard work!

hey you did it in the face of many challenges. Congratulations!

those leg warmers must have been a funny sight. Maybe you had a bit of the Jennifer Beals Flashdance look going.

Congrats! I was there as well, along with Dave (Runningfoo) and anyone not believing her so far. Believe me it was Frickin Freazing! I too had on leg warmers (I would have liked the big dance kind, that would have been nice) and sleeves and a long sleeve shirt on over that and I was still pretty cold. Dave didn't need anything cause he was too fast to get cold. The swim would have actually felt like a jacuzzi compared to the air temp. Keep Training, we'll see you next spring at your next one.

I didn't race, but this was in Utah.  Usually we don't have snow until mid november.   Just a freak cold front this week.  It was 30s this morning again.

I drove down from Boise to do this one. I for one was relieved to have the swim cancelled. I was really worried about getting on the bike soaking wet in 38 deg air. I only weigh 130lbs and I'm 5'9".. I have nothing to keep me warm!

I really enjoyed the race and I'm thinking about signing up for next year. I really liked the bike course. My husband did get some cool pictures. Who else has pictures from a tri with snow in the background!
