Subject: Which 70.3 Without Wetsuit?
I'm interested in competing in my first 70.3 next year. I live near Dallas, so if I could stay semi-close to home, that would be best financially speaking.
I'm starting to look at Galveston, Waco, Buffalo Springs or Chattanooga.

Who is familiar with doing these races and which ones won't really require a wetsuit?

I've done sprints and olys since 2011 and as long as I can stay injury free (which has been a big problem for me these past 12 months) I want to do a long distance race.

I've done Chattanooga....not the normal race but 70.3 Worlds last September. That swim was harder (I think) since it was mostly upriver. I believe the normal course it is more downriver? Anyhow, same river. Mid-September, temps were borderline and while it was wetsuit-legal for age-groupers (but not for pros), a wetsuit really wasn't necessary. I'm the world's worst cold-water wimp (lived in the tropics for years, plus skinny and just naturally cold-blooded; tend to cramp in cold water/weather), and I was fine without a wetsuit on a practice swim. I'd brought a sleeveless shortie and ended up wearing it in the race just because I thought it would be a bit faster than no wetsuit at all (didn't have a speed suit at the time) but really there was no need for it. Not sure when the regular 70.3 is but spring temps should be similar and summer temps warmer.

Chattanooga -- the 70.3 you swim downstream so that helps.

A bit far for you, but I believe Muncie 70.3 was w/o wetsuit over the past couple of years.

Yeah, that would be close to my aunt/uncle. Is that one usually in the middle of summer?

The water in buffalo springs is usually very cold. Galveston is usually wet suit legal but the water is typically low 70s in early April. This is the first year of Waco so I don't know what you can expect in October, but I would assume it will be wet suit legal, just no idea as to by how much.

I think I'm pretty much decided on Chattanooga

Now, I would just like to find someone to go with instead of going alone.

Chattanooga is down river and would be the most wetsuit-less friendly.
But, it was legal this year and I swam it in 25 minutes in a full sleeve.

Chattanooga is a great race.  The swim/bike are fast...the run is the payback for the fast swim/bike.  I've done it a couple of times.  It will be low 70's water temp so wetsuit legal.  The pros and some age groupers will swim it without a wetsuit.  It's a fast swim, even faster this past May since the course was about 100-125 meters short on the upstream leg compared to 2015 & 2016.  It's usually about 300 meters upstream and then downstream to the finish.
