Subject: HELP!!!!
Next year for my 50th Birthday i would like to attempt a triathlon. Currently i am out of shape ( understatement of the year ). I need to know what to do and how to train for this. When i was younger i use to run allot and im an Army vet so not scared to work hard. Would like to find a trainer/partner to train with. I live in Cheyenne WY but im in the fort collins area allot. I am not looking to win the dang thing i just wish to survive and finish. Any hints or tricks to training you may have would go a long way. I am a man that is 6'5 and about 260 lbs currently want to get back to 220 thats where i feel good at and dont look like a twig. Thank you in advance for any info you can give.

Welcome to BT. The site has a lot of good information including training plans and a lot of tips but the first step is to start training. look at the time you have in your day and block off a section for training and make a habit of using it. One of the biggest mistakes we older folks do is add too much too soon get a injury and then quit. take it slow but get started.

Welcome! I actually started later than you...been racing 6 years now and getting ready to turn 59.

First, as mentioned, start slow, especially with regard to running.

Second, whether or not you swam as a youth, get swim lessons. Many folks "think" they can bypass the lessons part and do ok by going to the pool and swimming some laps ... unless they come from a competitive youth swim background, they'll spend way to much energy fighting bad mechanics.

Third, regarding the bike, just ride. You'll help your riding immensely if you're properly fitted on a properly sized bike.

Fourth, consistency is the best way to get better and prevent injury...especially for the running. Start slow and short but try to run 4-6 times a week (if only for 10 minutes at a time). Your body needs to adjust to the demands of running so you have to add the time component slowly but steadily.

I have some sample workout plans you could pick the shorter workouts from.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRFMlblb1yqKn9H8OctU3i7S...

By now means don't hit the 70.3 or full IM plan, but any workouts less than 60 minutes would be fair game.

Strength stuff in there, too.

My mom is from Cheyenne, WY.  I attended the University of Wyoming.  The Laramie Duathlon was my first Multisport event about 18 years ago.  I didn't get all the way into the sport until 4 years ago when I was living in the Austin area.  The first race I did was the 2015 HITS 70.3 Marble Falls Triathlon.  I was living in Marble Falls, TX with the starting line 10 minutes from my front door and after seeing athletes in town on race day for a few years I decided that I wanted to be a participant and not just a spectator.  The over all winner in 2014 was an age group athlete living in Austin.  I read his race report from 2014 when I was getting ready for the race in 2015 and enjoyed his blog so I followed him for a few years since he was local and we had a lot (well a little bit anyways) in common.  I since moved to Oklahoma and he has since moved to Fort Collins.  You won't want to train with him, but he and his wife both coach triathlon so I you are looking for group training or an insider on gyms with pools, bike shops, etc I could get you in touch.  He would surely would have connections.  This forum is my favorite place for information though.  When I started I knew I wanted to do the race but didn't have any training information. I spent about 3 weeks just looking at the race distances and race times and figuring out how to manage my time to spend proportional amounts of time to train for each.  Then I got started and trained by time.  I didn't do everything the way the training manuals prescribe but I was still successful.  I learned a lot here while training for my first race.  I now do things much better than I did while training for my first race but we all start somewhere.  There is a learning curve and everyone here is willing to share what they learned with others and help them get through their first race and meet their goals.

Lots of races have a Try a Tri. It's usually really short and you get to see how you like it and practise the transitions.
