Subject: So, what now?
Although I have been dabbling with this sport for about 5 years now, this year was my first proper racing season. Did 2 10k (one more to go on Saturday) and 4 sprints.
One more race on Saturday and then that’s it until May next year. What do I do next?
Next year I plan on doing about the same number of sprints (maybe one more) and replace my last one with an olympic, just to try it once.

I was thinking to take a week off or 2 then start on building volume (long slowish sessions, +one running intervals session a week) until the end of the year and then start on a more varied plan.
How does this sound?

I know.....but if you are a sprint "specialist" you can really help your game with a winter of serious swim focus.

you are right of course (I hate it when you're right), especially as all the sprints have done so far have a shortened swim (to appeal to beginners who are intimidated by OWS). So an oly is 3 times the swim distance...

Yeah, swim is super important in Oly races.  But I'm like you -- I hate the pool.

And my poorest placings have almost all been in Olympic distance races...

I have my athletes taking a few weeks off organized training and then they hit the off season plan starting Oct 1.

They work high and low end speeds, cadence, etc on the run and bike.
Technique on all 3.
Strength

Use the off season to work on gaining fitness and strength, then depending when your cycle for races start, that's when you add the longer and slower stuff in.

Training long and slow in the off season will make you.... good at being slow in race season.

I'm in a very similar place training wise. This past year was what I would call my first race season with 4 sprints. I had some training issues, but I really want to build off this year and go into next year strong. That said, I'm dealing with mild planter fasciitis and I'm looking forward to some rest & recovery.

I'm still flushing out the details, but my plan looks like this (if anyone more experienced wants to critique, please do. I'm open to sugestions.)

- Last race for the season
- 1/2 - 1 week active recovery
- 2 weeks no planned training
- ~3 weeks casual exercise (social bike rides, join my wife at the gym, etc.)
- 9 weeks return to training schedule @ low intensity, low volume. Focus on individual sport form & mechanics in 3 week blocks.
- 5 weeks ramp up volume to Olympic distance training plan.
- 8 weeks Olympic distance training plan.

Sounds like you have it all planned out. Let us know how it works for you and I hope you recover soon.

The only time the pool is not over crowded is in the middle of the day, which means I only get about half an hour as I go during my lunch break. I suppose it quiet at 6am too but no. I know plenty of you get up in the middle of the night to train but I need my beauty sleep. I get up at 6am for work and that’s early enough thanks.

The oly I want to do is at the enf of August so I’ll have plenty of time to train in the lake but of course I will do some pool over the winter too.

If you're already good at long and steady, why now consider a Half Iron Man? The swim is only a bit longer than the OLY and it's a great achievement.

Check out the beginner HIM training plan on this site. It's free. If you can work your way up to where the training is doable, anything is possible.

Will check the plan out of curiosity but I don’t want to do a HIM. I am happy doing sprints for a variety of reasons: less training-more time to do other things- and I like the intensity of a sprint race, going as fast as I can (which is not very fast but it’s MY fast-although I did win my last race), flying through transitions., etc
I am going to try an oly next year, just because I can, and I like to try new things but that’s as far as I intend to go right now.
