I have been suffering from a herniated disc in my neck for years. Although mostly pain free since an initial flare up 5 years ago, I did something recently that caused it to return. I purchased a swim snorkel on the advice of my chiropractor as a way to get back in the pool without causing more irritation. I'm happy to get back in the pool, but concerned the snorkel will become a crutch once I can go back to "normal" activity. Any thoughts from people who have used one and weaned themselves off? What is the transition like?

I've not used one enough to have to wean myself off.  I mainly use it for kickboard sets and technical work.  I see a lot of top level swimmers using them for the same reasons I noted so its obviously a good tool to use (I'm not part of that top level group ).  Honestly, if you're doing it right, there's very little head rotation when you breathe...most of the turn is from body rotation.

Haven't been in that exact boat but similar with fins after an elbow injury that made it painful to swim without them and impossible to breathe to my dominant side. If you already have decent technique, it shouldn't become a crutch, and may even help you to focus on improving some aspects of your stroke. I would just gradually wean yourself off of it as your neck improves, maybe starting with just a hundred yards snorkel-free and slowly increasing the % of your swimming done without the snorkel. When I weaned myself off the fins, it did feel awkward and tiring at first, and my times were about 15-20 seconds/100m slower, but I was back to normal after about 4-5 weeks.

I'm an adult onset swimmer that has been using this site for about 3 years?

Here is something I have learned. Everyone is sooooo worried about using this or that, because it will become a crutch. Depending on who responds on here, snorkel, pull buoy, fins, paddles, will all either be a valuable training tool, or the worst thing known to man.

I use a snorkel at least once a week to evaluate rotation and my level of tautness in the water. (position/alignment too).

Snorkels are also recommended by the guys on Tower26.

I would use it and not worry about it.
