Hi Kate!!  Good to see you around again!

I am easily the worst swimmer in the group so can't help at all - I typically start at the back if it's a mass start because I know if I am indeed faster than anyone in front of me, I can at least draft someone for a bit.

Originally posted by Moonrocket Hi! I’m Kate- I was active a few years ago on this group (have the bike jersey to prove it :-) I’m glad to see some you guys are still active and even faster than when I was last here! I was hoping I could get some advice since I have not raced in about three years and my friends talked me into a relay that is this Saturday. How do you decide where to start in a swim wave? I used to always start Front and center- but what with not training (I did go swim the distance in a wetsuit this weekend) and getting put in a heat with Elites, M under 29 and Clydesdales and being a middle aged mom the question is different. I’m guessing I will swim just under 40 minutes for the 1.2 miles but really have no idea - last time trained I did it in 30 minutes. So, any tips on how to choose where to start in the pack?

I'm not a speedy swimmer, although I can seemingly go all day, so I usually start just behind the middle of the pack. I do tend to list to the right during the first couple hundred yards, so if the buoys are going to be to my right, I start off toward the left in hopes that I won't end up swimming into the middle of the shape (triangle, rectangle, whatever). If the buoys are to be to my left, I start as close to them as I can, knowing I'll get bumped around a little, but at least I won't be too far off line.

Hey everyone!

I have been off the grid and struggling a bit lately. Wanted to give you guys an update as I made a difficult decision yesterday that I would defer my registration in the Baltimore Triathlon. This will be my first year in 5 (not including the year they cancelled due to weather) that I will not be competing in this race. I have had a hard time staying consistent, and woke up Monday morning unable to move my neck (must've slept funny). That was the last straw, and I have not been able to complete an SBR workout since and think my body needs more yoga and less intense stuff for a few weeks. I also need to get back on my meal prepping and drop some lbs.

So! I am going to do yoga every day until my neck feels 100% better. I'm thinking I might make a goal to do at least 10 minutes of yoga every day after that to keep limber. I'm gonna get a mat to leave in my office to do it at lunchtime.

I feel okay about my decision b/c typically I'm excited for this race but I was desperately dreading it this year. But it still makes me pretty sad.

I will be back and better than ever next season though! Gonna start swimming again in October so I can get ready for the swimming season.

I don't have time to catch up on what I've missed, but I do want to welcome Kate back, and say that I would be down for getting a bike jersey if we still can. I didn't the last time it was offered and regret it for sure!

Originally posted by riles32807 Sappho, I started at wing, built my fitness, bulked up a bit, learned the game, and moved to flanker/hooker. Depending on what position we needed players for, I've also played outside center, lock, and even prop in one game. I know it's sort of a bandwagon, but New Zeland is my team. South Africa would be my 2nd favourite.

Lol. I'm sure it had much more to do with filling positions with bodies than my personal skills.

Mike Congratulations on your first race for years, and super cool to be able to do it with your daughter. Something I'm looking forward to with our little monster, albeit quite a few years away

Gretchen It sucks that you had 'one of those days' during your HIM. We've all had them, but its especially painful to happen on race day. Enjoy the off season, but don't let yourself sit around too long, try to get out there and have a jog or something, just for enjoyment.

Me I've lost my mojo this week. So far I've had 2 runs and 2 sessions on the spin bike. Another spin with some tempo work scheduled for tonight, and hopefully some longer workouts over the weekend. So I am pretty much on schedule. But I have been seriously lacking in self motivation this week, every workout has been a struggle to get started. And I did skip 1 run all together. So here's hoping that I'm out of my funk soon.

There's plenty of room on the band wagon, welcome aboard. As much as I hate to give the old enemy (SA) any credit, you've got a very good chance of a winner coming from those 2 teams. Hard to see anyone else getting the job done.

I hope everyone's been enjoying a rest week after racing last weekend. And good luck to anyone else racing this weekend.

So the pre-race crazies hit me last night. As I was checking my gear, I suddenly knew that I HAD to do some crazy nutrition plan involving a bottle of concentrated sugar water and jelly babies for my race tomorrow... I talked myself off that ledge.

I'm nervous about stepping up to the distance, especially the run. But I've done the training, and the brick I did last week was sort of a race simulation (1 hr bike/6 mi run), I surprised myself on how good I felt. Ready or not, I'll be giving it my best.

Good luck Riles! Last night my exercise involved trying this:

Image result for beavertown neck oil

Our any day, any time, easy drinking, go to IPA. This started life as a home-brew. We wanted to create a light, crisp, punchy, go to beer! A beer that you know you can pick up and appreciate or simply kick back, relax and oil your neck with (the name Neck Oil comes from our founder, Logan, fondly remembering his Grandad stating that he was “off down the pub for a pint of neck oil&rdquo.

Extra pale base malts are used to keep it crisp and give the hops a great platform to dance on. Masses of hop additions during the whirlpool and a huge dose of dry hops make this a brilliantly ‘easy’ IPA.

Thanks guys!

I'm working on a race report but I don't think it's going to happen tonight. So here's the short version.

02:27:05.85 total.
Swim went good, 12:57 (.5 mi)
The water had a little chop to it, probably due to the storm on the other coast of Florida, but still not bad. I did a lot of siteing and stayed on course/avoided other swimmers. Felt strong, but didn't push too hard, knowing I still had the rest of the race.
Bike went good, 58:25 (20 mi)
This course is on the water so wind on the bike is normal, but i swear it was worse than usual (again probably due to the storm) I think I went too hard into the wind then pushed the tail wind to make up.
Felt good until I stepped off the bike, both hamstrings cramped up and I felt like I was going to die.
Run 1:10:09
Toughed out the first mile, then walked the next 1/2. At the first turnaround I decided there was just too much distance left to walk it, I was going to jog it, or fall over on the side of the course cramping. By mile 3 I knew I could finish and things started to loosen up a little.
Spent the rest of the day on the beach with the family, and we stopped for recovery doughnuts. (Can those be a thing?)

No beer with the doughnuts, just coffee. But I did try a grapefruit radler (juice mixed with beer) that was really tasty. Interestingly, 'radler' is the German name for cyclists and a radler (beer + juice) was considered a recovery drink back in the day... maybe they were on to something...

Hello, all.  Traveling for work this week so a light workout schedule (about an hour a day, you know, like normal people work out ).  45 mile ride scheduled for Saturday which will break my record by about a mile.  Weather is absolutely perfect on the east coast right now.  Sunny, 70s and 80s, low humidity.  Love September around here, except that it means winter is coming, which makes me sad.

45 miles in the books yesterday, mostly Z2 but chased a couple of Strava KOMs.  Beautiful weather, mid 60s when I started and around 80 when I finished.  Supposed to be in the low 90s today.  I thought that 45 miles would be my longest ride ever, but checking my logs I did a 48 mile ride back in June of 2015.  Shooting for the record this coming Saturday - 50 miles.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend - go Ravens!!!
