Three rides in this week on the trainer and short run after one. I’m in Oakland, CA right now about to get up and start my night heading back east. There’s a nice gym at this hotel but I ended up doing a long walk at breakneck speed instead which was good though my lower back is killing me right now from it. I get to head home Sunday and hope to get back in the pool and maybe get a ride in outside over the next week I have off. The leaves are changing and I love riding in crisp fall air.

Meanwhile, I'm a cold-weather weakling and switched out my cassette and tire to the trainer ones (12-23 and an old Conti Ultra Sport).  I suppose I can still ride outside as long as I avoid steep hills or cornering hard.  

Just spent a week doing almost nothing, one light day on the treadmill and one Bikram session for the week.  I feel recovered, and fat.    My actual training plan doesn't start until the beginning of November so I'm going to focus again on core work this month.

Finished in 3:35:40. The weather could not have been better, and the Twin Cities Marathon crowd support was AMAZING as usual.

It wasn't a PR (3:32:08), but I think I'm proudest of this race. Came back from a broken foot in 2018. Focused on triathlon training until mid-July and completed my first two tri races this year. Did it on my own without a coach. And ran a negative split by 1:30.

Thank you to everyone here for the encouragement and advice during the triathlon process. Your tips paid off in cross training and opened up a new world that pays benefits in many ways.

Yikes.  Are you halucinating yet?    I did a dance marathon a couple of times back in college ("Thon" at Penn State) where I was up roughly 60 hours straight.  Your brain plays some WEIRD tricks on you when you're awake that long.

Congrats Ryan!! Sounds like you had a great race! 37 hours awake though, that is ROUGH. When I travel to/from Egypt I am usually up for around 35-40, depending on connections and such. It really messes with your head.

I'm off in a little while for a run. I decided that since I'm leaving for Egypt in 2 weeks (for 7.5 weeks), that there isn't a lot of point in getting back into swim or bike training. I'm gonna run focus for the rest of this year and then start IM training in the new year (after I get back and get my next tattoo on 12/20). That should give me 33 weeks until MiTi.

This!!  Did a couple MA to FL road trips in college for spring break, both times decided to drive straight through powered only by Mountain Dew.  The hallucinations were crazy.  Actually the second time I stayed awake after getting home for another 8-12 hours partially to get back onto a normal sleep schedule but partially to see the crazy stuff while a friend drove me around.

A weird and uncomfortable run today at lunchtime. It was a gorgeous day for a run (mid-60s, sunny, slight breeze), but something was off with my right calf. I ended up walking from my turn around home, just because I'm paranoid about getting hurt. When I got home, I realized one reason I might have thought it weird was that while I was running, I was about 15" faster than normal. Maybe I just shoulda slowed down! Oh well...it was a good trip for the dog at least. With the walk from turnaround, I counted 19 individual pees. :D

Hahahahaha! Love the dog walks and their need to send/receive their p-mail. I did a run/walk with the dog today for a mile. She will be 13 in a couple of weeks and she just took off running so I did my best to keep up - I was wearing jeans and a heavy fleece, completely not prepared to run like that with her. There were the couple requisite stops but she went hard for 2/3 mile before she slowed to a trot. Haha! After picking one kiddo up I got in another 2 miles before having to pick up the other kiddo and his cronies from volleyball practice. Fitting what I can where I can.
The 12 year old also had swim practice tonight. He’s in a stout program and swims 4 nights a week roughly 3500 yds a night plus dry land training. Shoot, I need to get in on this action!

Hey, all.  It's yoga month for me...went to Bikram three times already this week and did a post bike yoga routine from The Sufferfest (which was actually really good). 

@Jenn - I hear ya...my daughter has been swimming six days a week more or less (she's 17)...they do anywhere between 3-5K yards a session, plus she's been doing some other cardio and strength training 3-4 days a week in the mornings.  TOTALLY putting me to shame - she does more yardage in a week than my biggest month ever.  She's really focused on making Sectionals in the 100 Fly (needs sub-58, current PR just over 1:01).  She also just got an email from USAT - she qualified for Nationals LOL (which isn't that hard - finish top 3 in your AG at a race).

Hi Guys,

Been a while since my last post. We have been really hectic at work, a lot of time away from the office/home for commissioning work. But the boss is back from the UK tomorrow, and we seem to be past the most hectic time, so back to normal hopefully. Although I do have 2 or 3 days away this week on another job.

Anyhow,

Ryan congratulations on an awesome marathon time. Your running paces I can only dream of... even at the half mary distance.

Mike Where are the bike p0rn photos? hope she is coming together well.

Me A couple of weeks ago, I ran the Devonport half marathon. It's a changed course from last year, so although it was a much faster time I can't really claim a PB. But despite being a bit unhappy with my performance (due I think to 2 trips for work that week, and a bike the night before, not ideal build up) We spent the 2nd half of the race overtaking people, not being run down. So happy that. Also Mrs bullfrog and the little monster came over to watch the finish, and I got my first high 5 from my son in a race, so that was awesome.

I've also just finished week 1 of the 22 week 80:20 Ironman level 1 plan. I have a long, long way to go before I'm in Ironman shape, but it's exciting times, this week was a big step forwards toward the goal.

In other news, how is everyone enjoying the rugby world cup?

We're into the playoffs now, and a very lopsided draw in my opinion, title contenders NZ, England and Ireland all on one side, with South Africa having a pretty open run to the final on the other side. It's going to be an interesting few weeks.

Today is the one year anniversary of me signing up for a full distance ironman race. I didn't quite make it, but seeing that in my Facebook memories made me hop right out of bed (at 4:30) and go for a run. It wasn't fast or pretty or even long, but it is done and I hope it brought my motivation back. I seem to have left it somewhere.

I'm bringing back and old favorite of mine...the workout challenge. There are, as of today, 81 days remaining in 2019. My goal is to get in 100 workouts before 12/31. It will be challenging, especially with travel and the holidays, but totally doable. #1 is in the books.

I just spent a couple of hours laying out a training plan in Training Peaks based on their periodization methodology.  I was anticipating starting my base training in December, looking to race a couple of bike races in early to mid-May.  However, after entering my current Fat Thor fitness level, it basically said "Off season's over, brother, get yo' Fat Thor azz on the bike NOW!"    So I'm starting Monday. 

No more Fat Thor.

My negative split, 3 hour 35 minute marathon has convinced me to change up my 2020 plans.

I was thinking that about this time, I would start cross training and aim for two summer 2020 triathlons - the same two I raced this year.

Now, I've reinvigorated my desire to run a Boston Qualifier marathon. This week,
I re-hired my running coach from 2017, and dedicated the next 12 months to running a BQ. Should be a realistic goal - I need a 3:20 marathon to qualify, and about a 3:17 to successfully get registered.

In 2017 I tried for a BQ and missed by 17 minutes. Training was really hard but went mostly well. I had only 5 months of training with the coach, which wasn't much. By race day I was borderline if I'd qualify based on a 5k race. Then at Grandma's Marathon 2017, I ran into a hot, humid, dead calm day (NOT typical of Lake Superior). Oh, and I started out about 10 seconds per mile too fast for the first 15 miles. Over the last 5 miles I walked 7 times and finished in 3:32.

Apparently I'm ready for the madness again! Assuming I qualify at Twin Cities Marathon in 2020, I'd run Boston in April 2022, which means I can do a few triathlons in 2021.

Ironically, when asked at work what my career plans are, I consistently have no idea.
