What's everyone got on tap for the weekend? (Tri related or beer related)

I got out of work early so I did about a 1200 m, and a :40 run. Tomorrow is my son's birthday, but we're not having a party until next week, so I'll try to get a bike ride in tomorrow morning. Sunday my tri club has a swim/run training session.

Got three beers to try and the rest of today's Giro to watch - as my ma used to say i am guessing a man on a bike won! No exercise planned as off to Dr's on Monday to see why my energy levels are yuck (Might be an age/hormone thing...yuck!). Have managed 7 of my 8 rides to work though this week

Today's 2:20 on the trainer and 30' run almost took me out. I was flagging so hard on the bike. I think I was having low blood sugar at about 1:45, my insides felt like they were vibrating. It was super weird, since I don't have blood sugar issues at all. Took a gu and was ok for about 25', then started shaking again. I then finished my second bottle of Infinit (so up to about 700cal for two hours) and finished out the ride. It was a rough one. I just kept telling myself I needed to make it through one more song on my playlist, then I could wuit if I wanted to.

Anyone ever experienced this?

1:15 on the bike this morning as Vo2 Max intervals. four sets of 4x3' at 105% FTP. Somewhere along the way I think my legs fell off, but I had to keep pedaling anyway. Coach is ramping these up 5w each week and randomly alters the composition of the workout to remain at 12' total for each set, but reduce the rest between sets. Getting tougher each week.

Had a pretty good weekend training wise. 1:00 on the trainer Sat. Sunday was the club training, I think I was 2nd to last getting out of the water, 800 m swim, but the run was good. I tried to hold 8:00 miles for the 5k. I held it for about 2 miles then slowed down to 9:00 for a little recovery then was able to finish at about 8:30, for an average around 8:30. Getting close to my goal of a sub 25 5k.

Nutrition wise... not so great. Birthday pizza, birthday cake, beer, icecream...

Hey everyone,

Got 2000 yds in this morning. My shoulder has been bothering me terribly. I've laid on my foam roller the last 2 days, but it hasn't helped as much as I hoped it would. Going to give it a week, and if it's still bothering me, think I will go to the doctor to make sure it's nothing serious, and get a referral for PT. My rotator cuff (just inside my shoulder blade) just feels unbearably tight all the time.

I also just got a promotion, and am now the grants and contracts manager in my division! They told me 2 Fridays ago I didn't get it but then Monday somehow made it work and yesterday was my first official day on the job! It's going to be a busy few weeks/months but I'm super excited!

Congrats on new job! Good luck with rotator cuff: I've had surgery on mine so know the annoyance.

2200 yds of swimming and 1:08 on the trainer today. Both were tough workouts. I've been sssoooooo tired lately, despite sleeping a ton. My wife thinks I'm not eating enough. I find that hard to believe, as I feel like I'm eating a ton. But...she is usually right, so I'm conciously trying to eat more (nice problem to have, huh?).

So far this week I've had Monday off, Tuesday bike commute home, Wednesday bike commute to work and evening run and a run this morning. The weather is looking good, so I'll likely bike home again tonight.

Overall a reasonably good start to the week

You still commuting on your single speed? I've managed all my commutes so far this week 4/4 (I count each way as one) and looking good for tomorrow. I am able to ride home along the canal/disused train line and it is lovely Saw a heron last week! 

Any beer plans for the w/e? I will be on Desperados or similar tomorrow as I have nachos planned - yay!!!!

30’ run this morning followed by a leisurely 1700yds swimming at lunch. Feeling pretty good about both.

Local sprint tri on Saturday. I’m looking forward to it, but it will be the first race I’ve ever “trained through” completely. Coach has long ride scheduled for tomorrow and I’ve got some serious lifting scheduled at work tomorrow. Will be interesting to see how I do compared to three years ago when last I did this race.

Anyone else racing this weekend?!?

Yup, all my commuting is on the single speed. Because I get a work vehicle for my personal use it has to be at work every day. So that means the single speed lives at work ready and waiting for cycle commute days, and the truck stays in the warehouse for the night. I'm not keen on leaving my carbon toys lying around the warehouse to be bumped and scraped. But a $199 steel toy, no concerns there.

One thing I have learnt from a single speed, I am definitely a spinner, not a masher when it comes to hills... Man hills suck on this thing. But it has to be good for training I figure.

No beer plans for m, still 2 days of antibiotics left to get over last weeks sickness.

I have a question for the group, what is everyone's experience with spin bikes?

The reason I ask is I do have a trainer for the bike, just a simple cheap mag trainer one like this https://www.wiggle.co.nz/lifeline-tt-01-magnetic-turbo-trainer-incl-... (different brand tho) and although it's a good work out, man is it noisy. And we have a small house, so I'm not keen on using it when the little man is sleeping (And there's no way Mrs Bullfrog would approve anyway).

But, my understanding is spin bikes are much quieter. Quiet enough that I could comfortably get a 30-60 minute workout in when watching tv with Mrs Bullfrog in the evenings with a sleeping toddler in the next room.

I know that I can't 100% replicate my bike position on a spin bike. And from a pure training point of view it's not as good as using my bike on a trainer. But it's much better than no training. And if they are quiet enough to use next to a sleeping little one would open up another time slot so sneak an hour or 2 of training every week.

So my questions are, for anyone with experience. How noisy/quiet are they, compared to a basic trainer. And Although it's not perfect will I get enough of a training benefit on a spin bike to make it worth the effort?

Hey Bullfrog,

No experience here with spin bike besides at the gym, but it is so loud there I don't think I'd be able to pick out the spin bike from the rest. have you considered upgrading your trainer instead? Fluid trainers are a lot quiter than mag trainers. Or, you could go full boat and get a set of rollers!

Andrew, yes spin bikes are definitely quieter.  As with anything, the more you pay generally the better they are.  My gym (and also the hotel gym I frequent the most) have the LifeFitness ICG models.  You obviously can't get them exactly to your position, but you can get close and they have integrated power meters that are at least directionally accurate for me.  The flywheel is also a different feel and you can't just stop pedaling.

Nothing beats your own bike outdoors but spinning is a lot better than nothing and I would estimate about 80-90% as effective as a trainer.

Today was a 23.23 mile bike with 3x10min very hard, 4min easy between. 1:14:02 total, 18.8mph overall.

BOTW is Blissful Ignorance DIPA by Lupulin Brewing in Big Lake, MN. Blissful Ignorance about sums up training for my first tri.

Hi All— just a quick note to say I smashed my race yesterday. Beat my overall goal by 6’. Got 4th in my AG by 1:02. Sucked because I had a mechanical on the bike and that is probably the difference!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree that outside on your bike is best (and most enjoyable too) but it's all about finding the right work/family/training balance. 80-90% sounds a heck of a lot better than training gains found on the sofa

2 nice runs on the weekend for me, and a few quick laps in the pool at lunchtime today.

All of a sudden I've done at least 1 S/B/R workout a day for 7 consecutive days. Definitely the first time that's happened in a long long time. I think since the little man was born 2 years ago.

So more little victories. Now for the big test, can we make it 2 solid weeks in a row?
