For those of you who have been around a while it brings me great sadness to tell you of the passing of Chad Musgrove, AKA Muskrat37

I met Chad (who had recently changed his name to Kheiron) in 2014 after a lengthy friendship on BT. He opened up his home to this Aussie/Brit abroad. I had been to Kona and went to visit him in Seattle.

He had some struggles recently but I think had found happiness and peace and was in the middle of an awesome roadtrip with his teardrop home behind him.

He died in his sleep on June 7th of a heart attack.

Ride the heavens my friend. You were a special soul.
Im so sorry to hear this.

Seems like a lot has happened in the last week. Sorry to hear of friends passing, but happy that others have exciting adventures on the horizon. And Tulsa?!

My in-laws have been in town for the last week or so, and we spent last weekend in Shenandoah, with a Saturday morning trip to Luray SwimFest for me. Hope everyone is having a nice week so far! Back to work for me today.

I had my first OWS in the Big Lake this year Tuesday after work. At 54 F it was like swimming in a hot spring. I was cold all night. I don't think the air temp has broken 70 F for us yet this year, plus rain almost every day.

It sounds like you're ready for IM Ireland, which will also have some brisk water temperatures. ;-)

Wait, What? the water temp was 54* or air temp? Either way, if you were cold I would have died!! Everyone seems to be having yucky summer weather, hope it straightens itself out soon!

Water the air has been a sweltering 60-63 F high.

Land and Sky Relay route information

From Facebook:

Wanna learn more about the 64 mile route of the Land And Sky Relay? We broke it down by county in this series of blogs starting in Buncombe County, then Haywood & Cherokee County. http://bit.ly/LandAndSkyBlogPart1 (Buncombe) // http://bit.ly/LandAndSkyBlogPart2 (Haywood) // http://bit.ly/LandAndSkyPart3 (Cherokee)

Another interesting thing that I learned recently -- Robin P. probably already knows this -- is that one of the local TV stations is WLOS -- LOS stands for Land of Sky which dates back to the book The Land of the Sky: Adventures in Mountain By-Ways, first published in 1875. The Land of Sky phrase was also used as Asheville's PR campaign the first time around in about 1914.

Interesting thoughts about PRs arrived in my inbox this morning.

What if your personal record was about joy?

What if our personal record was about fun?

What if this summer you chased happiness?

I like the idea, but it would be hard to measure Maybe I am too much into numbers, stats, and analysis (Adam will probably join me here). How would I compare the amount of joy, fun, and happiness from one race to another? What factors would I include? How would I measure it?

I also think that you can have fun and enjoy the race even when you focus on the PR. Ultimately, you will have some sort of joy when you achieve the PR. The problem is when you do not achieve your time/distance PR - are you still happy? I may be upset if I don't get the number I was expecting, but I think that unhappiness will last for only few moments, and overall I will remember and enjoy the race overall (unless it was an awful and painful race). I think memories of great and fun race last forever, while remembering which race you had what PR get lost. Does that make sense?

I remember a lecture on happiness by Dr. Santos from Yale (available online for free). She provided tons of statistics on happiness. For example: students are very happy when they get good grades, but only for a moment, and they are back to their previous happiness level. If they get low grade, they are upset for a moment, and then back to their previous happiness level. Same with winning $$$, buying stuff, etc. The point of the lecture was that the things we normally associate with happiness, do not really contribute to our happiness level (or only for a little moment). I mentioned it, as it could be the same with PR. It will bring a joy for a moment, and then we will be back to our pre-race happiness level, remembering the best moments of that particular race.

This is my reflection

What kind of crazy talk is this?  . Agreed that sometimes we get too caught up in making sure we are doing all our workouts and "succeeding" at our races that we forget we do this stuff for fun!

Today, the first day of summer, I chased happiness by taking a day off work to go with a friend and our dogs to the beach. Great day all around!

I was supposed to do a Sprint tomorrow but was on the fence because the forecast is calling for thunder storms at race start.

Then yesterday Dug was acting really weird. We took him to the emergency vet at his cancer vet at 8:30. At 11 pm we made the decision to put him to sleep. He had a tumor on his spleen that had ruptured and he was bleeding internally. This cancer is totally unrelated to his osteosarcoma.

Needless to say I'm not racing tomorrow. I'm just going to turn the weekend into a training weekend.
