Subject: Manatees - 2019 Edition - Practice Maximum Enthusiasm - CLOSED

Welcome to the 2019 edition of the Manatees. Our motto this year is Practice Maximum Enthusiasm (yes, we totally stole that). We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for enough seasons and we've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome.

We have soon-to-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, cyclists and swimming specialists. We range from slow to fast, and beginner to veteran, but most of us are somewhere in the middle of all that. Our training philosophies, gear, objectives and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and active group. Inactive Manatees make us sad so please post to this forum frequently.

  • Please check in (even to admit you're procrastinating or overwhelmed) and be passionate.
  • Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory. This helps us all connect through messages such as Inspires and PM's, which some of us do on a regular basis. (If you don't know how, we'll help you). We have members that have been here a while and really know how this site works. We are ready and willing to help you navigate through the wealth of resources found on BT and elsewhere.
  • We use a variety of other tools, such as Strava, Instagram, and other Social Media sites to encourage, support, and get to know each other better.

We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend.

As always, any former Manatees are welcome at any time. To join, please respond to this message and include (or later add) your bio.

Please post a brief bio to the thread to introduce or reintroduce yourself by adding information in the format below and/or whatever you'd like to share.

NAME: What you're actually called in the real world.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook, Twitter, Strava or whatever name/handle you use from any other social media site if you'd like us to follow along.

STORY: Who you are, why you want to do endurance/multisport, any athletic background

FAMILY STATUS: Family situation (single/partnered/family/pets, especially pets)

CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: What do you hope to get out of this?

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Why do you want to join this group?

I'm back as well!

Name in the real world: Robin (In the classroom I answer to mom, granny, and Miss. Sometime my real name as well!)

Social Media - Instagram I'm fortissimo_15 I'm also on FaceBook and Strava.

Who am I and why am I an endurance athlete? I'm a boring middle school band and orchestra teacher who was going to retire at the end of this year but I changed my mind. Next year will be my last. Really! Why do I train? Because I love every bit of training and I want to get the love of racing back this year.

Current training- trying to keep my base by still swimming, biking, and running throughout the week. I also do strength but never blog it.

Family: Happily married to an amazing Sherpa. We have 4 fur kids: Caesar, an almost 16-year-old cat; Jack a 12-year-old Golden Receiver (he retrieves nothing, just receives and runs); Dug, our tri-pawed 8-year-old Golden Retriever (he has osteosarcoma but is showing the cancer who is boss!); and Lilo, our 5-year-old Siamese princess who likes to sit on my aero bars and tell me to work harder.

Races: Boulder 70.3 and probably a few 10ks and possibly a Sprint or Oly before the 70.3

Goals: I love training but the last few years have not enjoyed the stress I put on myself before a race. I want to let go of the stress and return to the racing for the fun of racing.

What makes me a good Manatee? Ummm… I'm pretty much not a great manatee other than I send mental hugs and positive thoughts to you all!

For those of you who run in colder climates, I got a pair of running gloves from Trailheads (kinda warm for NC, to be honest), that had some offers with it. Here you go!

The rubber is hitting the road a little bit fast here. I just got an announcement about the RAGNAR that we were looking at for December 6-7. The event has been renamed RAGNAR Florida Trail. It looks like we have until March to get organized assuming that we want to take advantage of the discount code. It's $1240 for a team of 8 so $155 plus fees per person for registration. If we decide to do the Glamping add-on, that would be an additional $185/person. (Glamping in not required, we just need to decide.)

Yikes--I am late to the party! No excuses except possibly being frozen.....

NAME: Karen

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I am on FB now (finally) but it is private. You can friend request me if you want regular updates on our travels, scenic photos from runs and rides, our cats, snide remarks about Idaho, and my cooking. (Most of it is that!)

STORY: I'm a long-time runner and sometimes swimmer (both since age 10) who somehow never got into tri until age 41 when living and working in Saigon, Vietnam. Got sucked into tri via a master's swim program and it just kind of evolved from there---mainly sprints and Olys in SE Asia for about the first 4 years, then did several HIM including two World Championships (it's probably my best distance). I'm an elementary/middle school teacher and spent most of my career overseas; returned to the US indefinitely at the end of last school year after my dad passed away earlier in the year. "Caring" for my mom--not sure actually who cares for whom, but neither of us have much family left besides each other. Currently taking a "gap year: and looking for a job stateside, preferably in a warmer climate! I took advantage of the additional training and recovery time to train for my first full IM (Malaysia in November) in 2018.

Why I do multisport--I have always loved running and swimming (would love biking too if I had people of the right pace to train with and could ride outside more), being outdoors, and peace and quiet. I like doing something that's not required by my job or family obligations, and being good at it.

FAMILY STATUS: Single, living with Mom, three fur kids. It's a "blended fur family" consisting of my Vietnamese cats Smudgee and Tomoko and "Mom's" Idaho cat, Shelby (who, of course, also sleeps with me). They seem to have all the issues that kids in a blended family do! I provide the referee service and a warm bed at night.

CURRENT TRAINING: I took some time off structured training after my IM--just swam for the first two weeks and then gradually got back to fun-running and easy biking, as well as strength training. Trying to gradually build back volume and intensity and stay healthy. I have been working with an online coach (with occasional off-season breaks) since late 2015.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I don't have anything planned beyond early June, as I really have no idea if/where I'll be working next school year and whether/when/where we might be moving. So far, I am signed up for three HIM: Challenge Wanaka (in New Zealand) in mid-February (very not ready; it's going to be more of a tourist/bucket-list thing); IM 70.3 St. George in May, and IM 70.3 Hawaii (also known as "Honu") in June. Depending on job/move status, I may throw in another race--possibly a late summer or fall HIM or full IM. It's my first year in 50-54 (yeah--I aged up today!). I was 3rd in my AG at Malaysia; maybe I have a chance to KQ if I can get this IM pacing thing figured out and pick a smaller race with tough conditions, or possibly qualify for 70.3 Worlds. I'd also like to do a few trail races (HM or shorter) locally or within a day's drive.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: It's an adventure and is what it is. I'm not obsessed with qualifying for Kona or Worlds, though it would be cool if I could do that. But that depends not just on my performance but on who/how many people show up. (For those who don't know, Kona and Worlds slots are proportional to # of entrants; in most races for women in my AG, one has to win to get the slot.) I would like to continue to work on my weakness (biking) and improve my running. I think I have a good endurance base after the IM training and need to build on that by getting back/developing some speed!

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have a lot of experience with running, swimming, and the various distances of tri (except full IM). I enjoy hearing about others' experiences and helping them with advice (or sympathy!) when I can. Even though I'm no longer training in near-total isolation in Vietnam, I still don't regularly get to train or socialize with other triathletes. So it's nice to get to know other triathletes online!

Sorry I'm late - I'm blaming the time difference

NAME: Stacey

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook

STORY: was an active kid playing basketball, netball and swim club, I even did the odd tri back in the late 1980s. Stopped exercising with any great regularity when I relocated for work in 2003 and put on a heap of weight. I started back doing tris in 2013 maybe at the suggestion of my brother cause it was a sport I could do that fitted with my work schedule. I did my last tri in December 2016 and since then I have been running. I discovered trail running in 2018 and I love it - most of my 2019 runs will be on the trails.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to Phil with 7 large fur babies

CURRENT TRAINING: just starting the year with a plan to run or walk for an hour every day to build some consistency which has been a very big issue for me.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS:
6 Jan - Walygrunta 13k trail run
20 Jan - Snakes and Ladders 15k trail run
10 Feb - Qi Gong 14k trail run
24 Feb - Swissmurdie 17k trail run
17 Mar - Bloated Goat 30k trail run (with 1,600m of elevation)
6 Apr - Judgement Tree 12km night trail run
4 May - Margaret Rive Ultra Relay???
2 Jun - PTS Save the Date???
23 Jun - Eagle and Child 21k trail run
14 Jul - Jolly Jumbuck 21k trail run
3 Aug - Truth and Consequences 25 or 50K trail run
6 Oct - Perth Running Festival Marathon
11 Oct - Pemby Trail Festival - 7k/21k/14k

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: have fun and get faster

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I'm not. I'm generally late to the conversation and of late haven't been as active as I have been in the past, but its a new year.

Chris

I'm up for being in a challenge. Currently I have a couple going on:

1. eat according to my food rules each day (so far I have lost almost 30lb since August and I have about 10 to go).
2. drink at least 1 litre of water a day (not sure what that is in crazy US measurements).
3. push-ups and a plank a day.
4. run/walk for an hour a day (this is with the ultimate goal of covering 2,019km in 2019).

A while back, I asked about yoga. Thanks for all of the recommendations! I have given Yoga with Adriene a try and like it so far. The price is right, that's for sure. (free on youtube)

I may also give Jasyoga a try. I like the athlete centered focus but worry that there is not a ton of content there.

Gaia also looks interesting with a ton of content and an Android app.

NAME: amd723/ hands/ Ann-Marie

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm on Facebook and Strava ( Ann-Marie Delahunty) and have a twitter account that I never use.

STORY/ Fmaily status:I'm single , am mom to a fur child Teddy The Griff ( he’s on strava too ) and very often have my mother and her dog (Charlie) living with me.

I started triathlon 8 years ago just because it seemed like a thing to try. I mainly focus on sprints and international/oly distance, but have a few longer distances in my legs too. My less weak discipline is the run, weakest is the swim ( sort of controlled drowning ). I run with a running program, usually cycle with others, and swim on my own.  This year I have made a commitment to myself to add a bit of yoga and or mobility training to the mix.  We’ll see how devoted I am to myself!

CURRENT TRAINING: I just started my training block for Choo 70.3. I’m already behind!

2019 RACES/EVENTS:

IM 70.3 Chattanooga
Lake Logan half ironman or oly ???
RAGNAR Alafia????

GOALS
Goals -- Every year my goal is to stay healthy and have fun. I’m usually good at hitting the fun part, not so much the healthy part. I’m sure 2019 will be the year I make them both ! I’ve recently been diagnosed with a fu*ked up right knee, so I really need to focus on the healthy part.

WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: I enjoy supporting my Manatee friends! I have learned a lot from past Manatee groups and I hope to learn from this group as well! ( stole this from Janyne)

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: https://www.facebook.com/cdban66, https://twitter.com/CDBan, https://www.instagram.com/cdban66/, https://www.strava.com/athletes/2116063

STORY: I had been somewhat athletic in High School, playing soccer, beach volleyball and basketball, but that was a long time ago. Marriage, two children, business ownership, and the general busyness of life just got in the way.  A number of years back I began going to the gym, lifting weights and such. Then, in late July, 2010, we had a family weight loss challenge. In order to lose weight (BTW, I did win the challenge), I began running. DD2 suggested we run a race at Walt Disney World, so I began to prep for that and my older sister joined in as well.  Before that race had happened, I began looking for more challenge/diversity, since I was enjoying the training. I had a friend who had been in tri’s a while back, he gave me his old bike and it grew from there. I have added in a mtb and took a bike mechanic class, since that appears to be the side of this I enjoy the most.

STATUS: I am a 6’3”, 50+ yr old male and I've been married for nearly 30 years. I have 2 girls, both in their 20’s.  My wife, Ann or TW(THE Wife), is the most wonderful person a man could have in his life and has been very supportive of this addition to my lifestyle.  Currently working on her MTB improvements, since she picked something up in mid June.

CURRENT TRAINING: I have found that I really enjoy trail running and bike riding. Currently focused on the MTB. I hope to add running back into the mix after the middle of January. Also, I have struggled to consistently do the stretching/recovery work that seems to help so much.

LAST YEAR: Not many positives came out of racing or training in 2018, since I really made little effort to race. I have been fighting PF issues for nearly 2 years now.

2018 races: The year started on the MTB, with a 40 miler in January. I concluded with an overnight event on the MTB in early december, which I really enjoyed.

2019 races: This year starts like last year, but I am not too motivated so whatever happens with this event is fine with me. After this, I may try to return some running to the mix and I still haven't gotten to an Xterra event, but maybe this is the year. And the Ragnar Trail Series may happen late in the year.

BODY COMP:  I am about to hit 230 (woohoo, holidays!), with a goal weight of 210+/-. Challenge to come

WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MANATEE: I am not the fastest, but I am supportive, upbeat, and would like to be in better shape, not just for triathlon, but for life. I have a bit of bike knowledge and a wealth of knowledge learned the hard way.  I read logs for info, laughs, and motivation, post a bit and you will likely receive an "Inspire" or 2 from me every now and again.

I will gladly pay an extra $185 for the glamping option!!!!!!!! I may have mentioned this, but when I did Ragnar Angel Fire the condo we rented was the difference between having enjoyed the experience or being miserable. It rained practically the whole weekend but we were only in the elements when it was our turn to run.

I am willing to do whatever the group wants, so my vote matters not. Of course, if it did, we'd all be sleeping in hammocks under rain flies and bug nets.

A couple of actual items of note, that time of year is relatively low in bugs and in rain. That said, this past year we were fighting rain during Rocks, Roads, and Reggae, which was the same weekend. So, it is best to be prepared in Fl.
