I was wondering what everyone thought about Youtube sensation Triathlon Taren? I have been watching quite a few of his videos.

For anyone that doesn't know who he his just search him on youtube. He post a video everyday. I have found him very helpful but am not extremely knowledgeable yet so I don't know if he is giving good advice or not.

I also watch the GTN (Global Triathlon Network) videos. Get a lot of info from these as well.

I like his stuff. He may not be the most knowledgeable guru, but he still knows a lot and has good common sense. His podcasts are short, about 7-9 minutes, and address a specific question, both of which I like. His podcasts are always positive too.

Entertaining, but some of his ideas are questionable--especially the nutrition stuff! OMG if I drank what he does every morning I would puke every morning! I don't think there is much research to back much of what he recommends in that area. Personally I think he is kind of full of himself. I find the GTN videos to be much more informative.

I guess I would add, if I were to give any constructive criticism, is that he has a tendency to geek out on the high tech gear a little to much. I think his sweet spot audience is probably the beginner/intermediate, but the gear reviews seem to be geared for the pro/ultra rich. I think that if a triathlete was in the market for a $1000 wet suit or a $10,000 bike they are more than likely in the know about these products already. It's kind of a mixed message - Anyone can do triathlon, but you will need $20,000 to be any good at it. Is it anyone or not?

No, you do not need $20,000 to be good at it! He is probably sponsored by some of those companies so he endorses their products. Ditto for most shows on Youtube, triathlon-related or not.

Agreed, I was only explaining how I interpret his shows as a mixed message.

The one thing I have learned very fast in triathlon is that the price of someone's bike has nothing to do with the level of their knowledge or expertise. I think GTN does a really good job with tech stuff. I don't feel like Triathlon Taren is a reliable source for information or to rely on his judgment (endorsement contracts) for buying advice. I completely trust DCRainmaker for any tech recs needed. He seems to be the most transparent with funding and review quality out there. GPLama Shane Miller has some good recommendations on his youtube channel too. I just don't really trust the information that Triathlon Taren publishes.

He went 4:36 @ IMPR 70.3 yesterday. Impressive in my MOP/BOP world. Andy Potts eats a fatty muffin as his pre-race meal. If Taren recommended that, the elitist tri-community would roast him - then write him off as a nut case. He's fun to follow and works alongside some top talent, so has more access to training tips/tricks than I do

I like him. I post videos to YouTube and it's hard to explain how difficult it is to talk to the camera, edit a video and produce a final product that people might want to actually check out.

And he does it every single day. I can't think of anyone else who has inspired or helped more people get into the sport of triathlon.

Oh and he's actually getting really fast.

A person's speed and good advice are not necessarily related. I think it is awesome that he can put together anything that draws more people to the sport and triathlon entertainment. I just think that there are other resources for training and technical support that have more value. I'm not referring to entertainment value. For example the training/technical advice that I have found on this forum has probably been the single most important resource for me and my development. Whatever gets you to keep swimming/biking/running is a good thing in my opinion.

I'm a big fan. I can't believe he puts out so much content. A video every day. It's really amazing. I truly believe he's helped a lot of people get into the sport and become better athletes.
