Good morning!

5:15am:  11 mile run work out

On my way back my route was blocked by a group of unfriendly dogs.  I considered hitchhiking to have someone in a vehicle escort me past the dogs to safety.  I ended up backtracking to where I could find a big stick.  Then tread lightly by them and knew that if they got too close that I would be able to hold my own. They respected my confidence.  They did bark and grit their teeth but didn't get within the length of my stick so I was able to make it home.

Have a great day all!

Would love to start posting my training adventures here again but sadly am not having any lately due to injury(broken elbow in Feb.). Maybe can start running in a few weeks; just not looking forward to starting all over for the second time in a couple of years. All I can do at present is ride a bike that isn't going anywhere, and "swim" (i.e. try to make it across the pool without drowning) a little. Plus no races planned for the indefinite future. Can't think of a single interesting thing about that.

That being said, one hour on a gym stationary with 28 minutes total of big gear work in Z3. I have been doing the Beginner Cycling Program on BT because it is at least something structured that has one riding six days a week (which is pretty much the only way for me to maintain any fitness right now) and didn't assume any fitness to start (which, after five weeks off everything, I didn't have). Figure I will transition to something more ambitious over the summer if feeling motivated.

Have had to face off the doggies many times, mostly when biking. Helps to yell loudly and carry a big stick! Glad you made it back safely.

Easy 30 minute run this evening. Hoping to get into the water tomorrow and Friday. Happy training.

I can ride a bike that isn't going anywhere.  I am medically cleared for swimming but I can't swim well.

Ya...I started over again after my little car wreck and concussion three years ago.  It is definitely easier to maintain fitness than to start over.

I only have two running routes.  I have done them 100 times.  I don't ever change them because I haven't had any problems with dogs on them and running in the country that is a big concern.  I hope that group of dogs doesn't show up on the route I did yesterday again.  If they do I will be down to one running route.  My bike route, on the other hand, has plenty of dogs.  I don't get chased every time I ride but enough that the dog sprint was part of the planned work out.  Last year my coach suggested that I get an audiovisual of a barking dog to place behind the bike trainer so the quality of my indoor training would be a good as my outdoor rides.  :-)

We all have to start over at times...I had to do the same this year. I was only "dead" for about 30 minutes...apparently that's hard on the system, hahahaa.

60 minutes on the trainer watching IMLP bike course video, judging by the puddle it was a successful spin. It feels like studying when watching the course videos. Hopefully get a swim in later on, but no guarantees on that one.

Edit...Wait a minute, this is yesterday. Yesterday was 5 miles on the treadmill and 10 minutes of stairs in the hotel.

Cheers,

Steve

In Vietnam there was always a bunch of annoying dogs by the temple in the industrial park where I did my outdoor rides. I know that sounds wrong on so many levels in a developed-world context! (What is a triathlete, a temple, and a pack of dogs doing in an industrial park in the first place? But there you have it.) Have also been chased by a baby water buffalo (not in industrial park, but on a normal road!)

Also no shortage of bike-chasing dogs in rural Idaho. Maybe I should adopt the dog audio-visual idea for some sprint work on the trainer.

How long have you been in Idaho?  My sister served for 18 months as a full-time missionary in the Idaho Boise LDS Mission.  I am sure she has some rural Idaho bike stories. :-)  My wife was out there visiting her brother three weeks ago.

Full-time just since last June. Mom and Dad moved here in fall of 2017 when I was still working overseas. Dad died suddenly four months later; I came back to be with Mom after the end of our school year in June. (No other family.) Not sure if we will stay or not. Mom doesn't like the winters; I applied for teaching jobs in Hawaii. We both have some connections there. Also looking locally--will see what develops. I am good with either as long as no long commute is involved.
