So...I am building a bike and since the last set of wheels I bought were Flashpoints (if you have been in this sport as long as I have you may remember those ) I am looking for some opinions.   I was thinking Zipp 404s  - just because they are a brand I am somewhat familiar with - but would love to hear some feedback on these or comparable options.    Thanks!

1) HED Tripoke Front with Rear Disk (I like the aluminum rim clinchers.  I can swap them with training wheels and don't have to worry about changing out break pads)

2) Zip 404 Firecrest front and back

3) Zip 808 Fircrest front and back

4) Flo 60 front and back

5) Zip 404 front and Zip 808 back

The above are all options I looked at in clinchers.  There may be other options I would have looked at if I were looking at tubeless options.

I went with option #1 and have been happy with it.  The aluminum rims make things easy and the clinchers are easy to work on and deal with when you get a flat in a race.  I was worried that the 808 in the front would be too deep for crosswinds so I was favoring an 808 (or disk) as a rear wheel option only.  I wanted something deeper than the 404 so the Flo 60's seemed like the best depth for me.  I have taken my training wheel to races that had wind to use if I thought the wind was going to be too much for the Disk rear but have never used the training wheel in the rear and ever with gusts up to 15 MPH haven't have any problems with handling riding with the disk.

I got my wheelset for $1000 which I felt was a good buy.  My wife eventually forgave me for after she got over the sticker shock.

thank you for the thorough info and opinions.  I think the 808s aren't great for me as wind is an issue.   I like the 404s but feel like there have to be less pricey options. I would love to pay $1000 for a set!   Will check these options out.

Hed Jet 6 front and Jet 9 rear with disc cover if you wish.

Aluminum brake track actually stops :-)

Run them tubeless

Flo would be a close 2nd.

Zipp is a great wheel but no there when you look at bang for the buck

I have the HED jet 6 plus and love them. I definitely would not want to go with Carbon race wheels then have to switch brake pads all the time. So, really Flo/HED are the ways to go. I think the JET Blacks are really cool and I've heard great things about the brake surface on those but I couldn't justify the extra money vs JET plus when I'm trying to not use the brakes at all during a TT.

www.mybikeshop.com has the HED jet 5 plus for only 825, pretty good value IMO

+1 for the HED's although I don't own them.  They are universally well-liked.  I have a set of ENVE 6.7's that I bought used for a good price...otherwise, I'd be owning the HED's...either 6/6 or 6/9.

Whelp....I am 99.9% sure i am going with the Flos.   I think a 60 in the front and 90 for the rear..but may just do both 60s.   Can't beat the price point and I think they will really suit my needs.   Once I have the whole thing built I will add some bike porn      Thanks for all the input!  It helped a lot.

Flos are great wheels. I have a set of Flo 30s for training. And HED 60/90 for racing.

One point to consider : HED has a crash replacement program. Last time I checked Flo did not.

I used the HED program in the past and it easily made up for the difference in price.

You now have to choose between carbon or aluminum brake track.
