Subject: Open water swimming when water quality not monitored
Hello tribe!

My first tri is coming up, on June 2. I need to get some open-water swimming practice done during May. I'll be wearing a long-sleeve, full-body wetsuit.

The water quality at the beaches/lakes around here (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) isn't monitored until June, which is obviously too late.

What to do? Risk it and go swim anyway? Any way to be able to tell if the water is nasty? (I know to stay away after heavy rainfalls, but that's about it).

Thanks!

Ha! I've never checked the water quality for my open water swims...swam in lakes and rivers since I was a kid.  Of course, I'd be a little more careful if the bodies of water I swam in habitually had water quality issues.   I'd be surprised if there's any issues where you are...I would suspect it's too cold for any bad things to grow (at least for early season).  If you're really concerned, I'd just put on the wetsuit and practice sighting/swimming at the pool.
