Subject: Time Between Sprint Tris
Hi everyone,

I've got my first tri in several years on July 13, a mini sprint: 1/4 mi swim, 10 mi bike, 5 km run.
I'm thinking of adding another sprint-ish tri which takes place 8 weeks later: 1/2 mi swim, 11.2 mi bike (what a lot of people might call dirt road/gravel ride but I ride my road bike on dirt/gravel all the time in Vermont), 5.3 mi hike up and down Monadnock.

Is this timing too close for comfort? How would you handle recovery and then training for the next race? Does it make sense to cut it into two 4 week chunks i.e. Week after 1st sprint cut way back, build for 3 weeks, cut back again 5th week, do some tempo sessions, 7th week taper?

I haven't registered yet for the second race. I'm considering waiting until I finish the first one to decide on the second (it's a small local race, it won't sell out).

I should add, the second race is called "Full Throttle" but I'm a "Half Throttle" kind of racer. I'm just out to have fun and not get injured. My work is very physical, and being injury free is top priority.

I don't know how old you are but 8 weeks between sprint triathlons is a lifetime.  And no, I'm not downplaying sprint tris.....they will always be the best of triathlon in my book, and have always been my favorite.....but geez, it's just not THAT much work to have a huge impact on your recovery.

Ha! I'm 41, hope that doesn't change your answer. So 8 weeks is enough to safely build to twice the swim distance, and an almost twice the distance trail run? I mean, I can hike it, but I will try to be quick about it!

It would be for me.....and I'm just a guy who has kept in decent shape over the years.  I'm 59 now.....in my 30's and early 40's we did 6-10 sprint tris in a summer.  In my 20's we'd run them back to back on sat and sun.....and drink beer like fishes in between. LOL    My last foray into triathlon was when I was 50-54....that first summer when I was 50 I ran 5 sprints and an Oly.

Next summer, at 60, I'll get back in for a few years.....or until I get bored with it again.  I won't be scared to run a sprint every weekend if my old knees hold up.

At 41.....8 weeks is WAY more than enough time between events....even building for a slightly longer distance.

I think you can do a sprint tris on a few hours rest. There are tons of race formats that include multiple sprint tris in a weekend or an Olympic tri followed by a sprint tri on the same day. Even Nationals has an Olympic tri followed by a sprint the next day and lots of people do that. Have fun, don't over think it.

I will have a 41 on the back f my left calf when I run into the lake on the 18th of May for my first Sprint Triathlon since 2008 (but I didn't train for the one in 2008 so this will really be my first sprint Tri).  I will be doing it again on the 15th of June with another Sprint Tri so that will be two lifetimes later but half the time between your races.

Note:  After my 2nd Sprint this year I will not race again until my 70.3 on September 21st.  That will be my 6th 70.3. I then will be doing a Marathon on the 5th of October 2 weeks later.  I think those two weeks will feel like a short life, but historically my fastest races are two weeks after my "A race" 70.3 race.  I am in peak shape at my "A race" and those two weeks of recovery work about like a taper. Yes, I feel crippled and sore, but the times always surprise me coming in ahead of where I think I am at.  I may take this marathon slow.  it will be the first marathon for two of my siblings and I may be pacing a 3rd sibling who wants to run it for a PR (His PR pace is my marathon training pace).

8-weeks is more than enough time to recover and build to a longer distance.  There are a number of plans here on BT, you can use one of the 12-week plans and use the last 8-weeks - you'll be golden.

Also depends on your training load.

If you are training 20 hours a week and killing it, 8 weeks is nothing.
If you doing like 2 hours a week, 8 weeks should be fine, but you might be a little tired the week after...

I've done back to back races (sprint/sprint and Oly/sprint etc.) while in my late 40's/early 50's, you'll be fine. Train to swim the 1/2 mile distance for your first one which will set you up for your 2nd one.
