Subject: Compression Sleeve For Prevents Calf Strains/Pulls?
Hi,

I've been having an problem with calf strain/pulls over the last year and am wondering if a compression sleeve would be useful in preventing injury. The information I've read online is inconclusive. Has any one had this problem resolved by using a compression sleeve?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, calf sleeves are probably not going to solve your issue. You probably a have an underlying muscle imbalance or weakness that needs to be addressed. It may also be helpful to review your training log and see if you were doing more mileage or intensity around the times you got injured. That would be a sign to ease up your mileage slowly or pull back on tempo sessions and speed work.

Jay Dicchary has a good book called Anatomy for Runners. Good resource for tests to determine muscle imbalances as well as exercises and stretches to remedy them.

Lastly, have you considered if your shoes are appropriate for you? Just something else to consider.

I don't use them for prevention and I think that is not their most effective use, although certainly some athletes do wear them routinely for training and competition. As the previous poster said, it's probably more useful to take a look at your training--how quickly you're increasing mileage, surfaces you're training on (it might help to do some running on softer surfaces if you can find some safe ones), shoes, strength, and flexibility. I do find compression socks useful sometimes for recovery--especially after a long run or longer race such as a marathon, half-marathon, or iron-distance triathlon, and for extended car or plane trips, especially if soon after an event.

Compression sleeves and socks, to me, are over rated when geared towards the triathlon community.
They help with poor circulation, but that's not what you are after.

More than compression sleeves, consider ART massage. That can help get the knots in muscles loosened up that cause the pulls and strains. One step above rollers IMO.
