Start wide so you don’t kick someone in the face.

I just used breastroke, side stroke and backstroke in my first tri on Saturday. I'm pretty sure people were annoyed. I did swim way off to the side to purposely avoid others. My swim was dead MOP as far as time.

Try this in the pool if you can: Swim with one arm (the good shoulder). Do one length, see how it feels. You will be slow but should be slightly faster than breaststroke.

I do 1-arm swims as drills and this actually helps with developing good body position in the water.

When I do 1-armed 100's I am 10-15 sec. faster than my breastroke 100's.

If the swim is wetsuit legal a 1-armed swim won't be too bad for you.

Just my $0.02

P.S. I've fractured collar bones on 2-3 occasions where I did entire workouts with one arm (2000-3000 yards).

I have no doubt good swimmers could freestyle with one arm faster than I can breastroke. It's very humbling to swim next to those 14 year old kids at the pool.

The problem with breaststroke for me would be that the kick would wear out my legs before I got to the bike. I guess if it was breast or sit out the race, I would do it.

One thing I would not do is worry about what the other competitors think. I pay the same amount as any of them (well, one race I get a $5 discount for being in the club...) and as long as you are not trying to impede them, I don't feel they have any reason to be mad. I would still stay far to the side of the bad shoulder (to get my whole body between it and the other swimmers) and maybe even give the rest of the field a few second head start.

Enjoy your race!
