Total Time = 5h 57m 49s
Overall Rank = 53/56
Age Group = M 45-50
Age Group Rank = 5/6
Pre-race routine:

Wake up in lovely Hampton Inn on lake, right next to the park where the race is held. Unfortunately, I didn't account for the channel when booking, and with no dry bag, I decided not to swim to the start.
Event warmup:

Watch the full and half distances start their swim.
Swim
  • 1h 04m 3s
  • 1760 yards
  • 03m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

I never knew that the finger lakes had currents! Swimming out was like swimming upstream in a river, and the uncharacteristically higher wind of the day didn't help. Once I was on the return, I moved faster, but the waves were significant enough that it was on the return I caught a mouthful of lake water as I turned into the current to breathe.

What would you do differently?:

Learn bilateral breathing.

Wear a wetsuit if I can ever get comfortable in one.
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

Transitions aren't my thing. I know time is time, but when you're barely worrying about the BOP, stuff like flying mounts is irrelevant.
What would you do differently?:

not spend the walk from shore to transition chatting with my wife.

OK that's not true. I'm glad she's there to see if I didn't drown.
Bike
  • 2h 50m 5s
  • 29 miles
  • 10.23 mile/hr
Comments:

My derailleur was absolutely possessed. My front shifting was also screwy, as I threw the chain off the ring TWICE.

But even with that, I was limited by my size on hills, which I did walk a couple times.
What would you do differently?:

train more
lose weight
have a better setup
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

What would you do differently?:

Not forget my race belt with my bib for the run!
Run
  • 1h 58m 12s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 18m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

nice course, well supported

What would you do differently?:

Be ready for it?

This race was entered with sporadic training, dropping down from the Half which I signed up for.
Post race
Warm down:

No time man! I had to take a volunteer shift that I was already late for!

I was the bike line dismount guide as well as the transition exit bike theft checker. I had about 4 hours to sit in a chair after the event. It was nice. Chatted with staff, racers, and people checking it out for the next year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weight
training

Event comments:

I am a huge fan of this event. I should be a brand ambassador. The RD knows what he is doing, the traffic safety was top notch where it counted. The volunteers were great, the volunteer co-ordinator has to be the best in the business. Swag is cool.

Forget the premium price on the IM name. Do Steel distances! These people are amazing!

Subject: RE: Peasantman Steel Distance Triathlon - Intermediate Course
I'm considering doing Peasantman 2020 but have concerns over the small field of athletes. Is traffic safety an issue, specifically on Route 14A, when returning to town? Was also curious about the level of support out on the course - from aid stations and bike mechanics for those doing the longer distance?

Appreciate your feedback and time!
