I have just bought a magnetic bike trainer (like a wind trainer) and I'm getting a bit bored with it. Does anyone know of any good bike training videos or dvds that put you through an intensive program? I have rang some bike shops and they don't stock them. Cheers.

I have heard the Spinervals series is really tough. They are just audio though.

no - spinervals are not just audio - they come in VHS or DVD format and they are videos. On the video, Coach Troy Jacobson runs an interval workout and he has guest cyclists (some amateur and some pro) doing the workout. Once you've watched it a few times you tend to ignore the guest cyclists, but it can be helpful to watch them for technique tips occasionally. Graphics on the screen include a clock timer and description of the gear you should be in for each interval. Some of the more recently filmed titles also show a % effort and target heart rate for each interval set.

There are 20 some titles that range in difficulty from fairly easy 45 min workouts to 3+ hour workouts. They focus on cyclists (as opposed to fitness spinning) and I found them very helpful, especially over the cold winter months. I started using them as a complete novice cyclist and was able to keep up with the workouts just fine, and I learned a lot about the sport. I would recommend them pretty highly. I plan to use them frequently over the winter this year.

go to http://www.spinervals.com/to check them out.

I agree. Spinervals are great videos. I don't just use them during the winter I use them during the week after the kids go to sleep. There are some videos just for triathletes and for time trialing as well as mountain climbing. I have 6 videos and use the recovery video a lot.

Just been looking at the Spinervals videos and they look excellent. I was wondering how people use them when building base endurance. My focus this winter is to build a strong base and these videos have lots of intervals etc which look fairly anaerobic a lot of the time???? Is it just a question of starting with the lower intensity workouts and building up, or perhaps mixing these sessions with simple low intensity spinning sessions during the week? I guess I could start with easier gears than recommended and then move up as my fitness improves????

I spent a fair bit of time on my bike trainer last winter and it didn't pay off as much as I expected, although it was the first time back on a bike for a long time and I tended to just make it up as I went along! This time I want some structure to work with that will see me hit the roads next spring in far better shape than I am now. I can do the distance but am pretty slow and the hills really kill me.

I'd be interested to hear how people use these types of videos as I'm in the US in a few weeks and hope to get them then, as they are hard to find in the UK.

Thanks

I've used them a couple of times when I couldn't get out and found it much better than watching TV. Like riding alone, you need to have self motivation to push yourself. I think there's a 3 hour video for Ironman training.

so, should I be using them for building my base endurance over the autumn/winter or are they a bit too intense?

Thanks Charlie

I'm going to re-read the Triathletes Bible (for about the 5th time...) and try and really get a handle on what to do as prep and base phases for the coming months. I think I need to avoid interval training until I have built a stronger foundation of aerobic endurance in all 3 sports. I just hope that doesn't mean 60 mins of steady cycling on the trainer......maybe I can just avry it a little to create some gentle rolling hills from time to time  : )

never done spinnervals but i own all the trainright dvds. they are the best!!! i'd start with the climbing one and then build your collection from there. the time trial dvd is also good for triathletes. any level of athlete can do these.

you could always put on your heart rate monitor, pop in a long movie and go for an endurance ride.

Good ideas - thanks.

I plan to pick a couple up when I'm in the US later this month as you cant get them easily over here. I have no doubt they'll be a boost and will definitley use them over the winter at some point.

I like the movie idea. I reckon I need a cheapo DVD player to leave on the old telly as I plan to put the bike trainer in the garage this year so I can use it early or late and not wake the family up! Bad Boys cycle sessions her I come - great excuse to expand the DVD collection a little.....

I've never used training videos specifically, but I do like to ride to European cycling videos, like VHS tapes of the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.  I've got plenty of those and they help to relieve the boredom!
