Panama City Beach, Florida

World Triathlon Corporation

Sunny
Total Time = 16h 14m 54s
Overall Rank = 2139/2283
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 259/374
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45. Shower. Cinnamon raisin bagel w/ PB & J. banana, coffee OJ. Took special needs to drop off. Already had food and drinks on bike. Check tires and made sure bike was ok. Drank a gator aid a Cliff bar 1 hr before swim and GU 15 minutes before.
Event warmup:

Putting on a wet suit is a pretty good warm up.
Swim
  • 1h 50m 18s
  • 3800 meters
  • 02m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good Swim. This is how fast I swim 2.4 yards or 2.4 miles. I saw 16 Jelly fish and one silver fish with a black strip. Someone saw a stingray and allegedly there was a shark prior to the swim. One person was stung by a jelly fish. The swim wasn't bad over all.
What would you do differently?:

I kept getting stuck behind this guy who could swim faster than me but couldn't navigate for his life. Every time he got off course he would cut sideways doing a breast stroke flailing his arms and legs like an over sized frog. So frustrating and I'm not a good swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 13m 15s
Comments:

Good transition. Fresh water rinse. I always pack in the order I need things and that helps. I pull it out and put it on and move to the next item. I had a cliff bar and water.
Bike
  • 7h 24m 29s
  • 112 miles
  • 15.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice course and good ride. Some of the asphalt was rough. The first 56 miles couldn't have gone better. I was keeping hydrated and eating enough. I felt strong.
What would you do differently?:

I know what I was doing, but what was I thinking. I put an OJ in my special needs bag. I craved it the first half of the ride and thought of it constantly. When I got to special needs I took a big drink and it tasted SOOOO good. That lasted 5 minutes. I started projectile vomiting. I know what to do now. slow down sip water and let my stomach calm down. I had sugar packs to give me calories. Killed my bike time. At that time I realized I should just enjoy the rest of the day and finish.
Transition 2
  • 07m 59s
Comments:

Good transition. Didn't eat only drank water
Run
  • 6h 38m 53s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 15m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok run. The day went sideways on the bike, so I opted to just enjoy the rest of the day. I had additional sugar packs so I used those with ice to get calories and hydration. Once everything was steeled. I had coke, soup, chips and fruit at aid stations. I made a friend Dr. Glen from Trinidad. His coach gave him aid on the course coffee and bananas.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink OJ on the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Because I vomited, they let me get an IV. I did get my first You are an Ironman from Mike Reilly. I will post picture later, plus the pro race winner gave me my finishers medal, so that was nice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Orange Juice

Event comments:

Don't drink orange juice on the bike. If you throw up get an IV, it makes recovery so much nicer. and $75 for a 1 hour massage was one of the best decisions ever. My wife is the real hero as best sherpa in the land.

OOF - noted "NO OJ!"
Glad you were able to recover from that and enjoy the day.

Orange juice = bad, duly noted.  IV, massage, and the best Sherpa around = YAY!!  Sorry parts of your day were a bit rough but I'm so glad you were able to pull it together and get to the finish.  As the relay manatees were racing and getting updates, there was occasional concern you might not get there in time - I'm so glad you proved us wrong!  Great job, Jim!!
