Subject: Two-a-days?

Looking for some input from the Grey Guys/Gals and more experienced athletes here.  My "basic schedule" calls for two workouts on Mon and Fri.  Weekends remain empty, to be used for recovery and/or playtime.  My plan for Short Bike and Short Walk/Jog is 45m on my 2 Base weeks and only 30m on my Recovery weeks.  My Med Swim will be somewhere around 1400-1600 yds.  My Short Swim will be between 1200-1400 yds.  My "basic schedule" looks like this:

  • Mon - Short Walk/Jog and Med Swim
  • Tue - Long Bike
  • Wed - Long Swim
  • Thu - Long Walk/Jog
  • Fri - Short Bike and Short Swim

My question is, do you think I should be doing my two-a-days as separate AM/PM workouts, or would I be okay doing them back-to-back?

ETA:  I know, it doesn't look like much but I'm really only interested in building a solid base this year, after a long hiatus from training.

My experience is that doing two workouts in one day will work best if you have some rest interval separating them to recover from the first workout before the second. That being said, it is difficult to do and I nearly always want to double them up back to back for convenience and time saving on the post-workout shower and such. If I do them back to back, I make every effort to do them in race order and NEVER swimming last.

You can apply yourself best to each workout if they are separated. There's also value in "brick" workouts where you do race sports in order to get used to the transition of effort. However, if you're just working on building some volume, getting it done is worth more than complicating things to the point of no fun. If you have the luxury of higher quality workouts, that's fine, but do what works best for you.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good!

For building your base fitness, I would stick with separating the two a day workouts by at least a few hours. You can add some bike/run brick sessions into your race specific plan, but I wouldn’t concern myself with those in base building phase.
