Goodmorning BT!

I got back into the groove this morning with a 45-minute workout on the bike trainer at 5:45 AM.

My wife has thyroid cancer and she went in for surgery on the 6th of February to have the Thyroid glands removed.  The following Tuesday we had our first club work out for the local Youth Running Club that my wife and I started, and on Saturday the 15th my brother took his first crack at doing and 135-mile trail run and I volunteered to be his pacer.  Oh... I also worked with the Beast Pace team as a pacer at a 15K race on the 8th.  So....I have been a little distracted.  Today I kick-started back into the triathlon training.  My first race is 16 weeks out so I am replanning all my training to get back on target for races.

Have a great day.

First off, we'll keep your wife in our thoughts.

Glad you're back on the saddle, while it seems you never left the saddle.

How much of the 135 did you pace your brother for?

I got my usual 7 miles on the road this morning. I caught a great picture while out, I am not smart enough to do pics on here but I put it on my instagram. ti3yourshoes is the instagram moniker.

Have a wonderful day today!

Thanks...for your thoughts.  My wife has got a ton of support form people which has been great.

I learned Ultra Runners mean by "Technical Running".  It means that you can't run with your eye closed without tripping and that you have to plan where you place each step.  We had rain most of the week so there were lots of mud, puddles, etc.  This was on a backwoods hiking trail that went over lots of rocks too.  Some people said there were sections with drop-offs and sections where they were sliding backward on the slick rocks. One lady said the trial run she did in Alabama was tougher, but everyone else said this was the most difficult course they had ever been on.  Several people dropped out after 50 miles. My brother was one of them.  There was a 50-mile buckle though so even if they signed up for the 100 mile or 135-mile options they got the buckle for the highest milage they completed.  I was planning on doing 20-30 miles with my brother but just ended up doing 7 miles with another friend that I had in the race.  He ended up winning the 135 miles. I didn't see what was so crazy about the course but I was 100% fresh running with a guy running from miles 70-77 at 3AM in the dark and cold.  What I was doing should have been a cakewalk compared to what the runner was going through on those miles. I learned a lot in the short 7 miles. I will be a better Pacer the next time around and may ever have to do the 70-mile warm-up to see what the big deal is with this "Technical Running".

I only got 15 miles of running in last week and all of it was 50-100% slower than my marathon training pace.  I didn't get any cycling or swimming in for almost two weeks, so I missed as many days in the last two weeks as I normally do all year.  It felt like I was away for eons.

I have learned with my two ultras, that you learn a lot about yourself. Not dissimilar to other endurance events, except that you are JUST MOVING FORWARD ON YOUR FEET. The mental aspect is wild.

Curtis, I will keep tour wife and your family in my prayers.

EZ 4.25 mile run on the treadmill. 70 degrees and humid this evening. Forecast for the race Saturday is 28 degrees at race start. It’s been awhile since I’ve raced in weather that cold. Gonna have to game plan on my clothing choice.
