My 1st 3rd place pro, Jason West, came out of T21 on fire & made up a 1:40 gap in 6 miles (he was running a 5:10-ih pace). His run was so impressive to watch. Once he moved into 2nd, my new guy was Tim Reed. He was in the hurt locker pretty bad & almost made 2 wrong turns. Saw Tim O'Donnell pushing both kids in a stroller while Rinny was on the run. There was a medical event during the swim. I was by transition when the med team flew by in a gator. They were doing chest compressions on the man & continued after getting him in the ambulance. The ambulance didn't leave for a good 10 minutes, so I don't know if that was a good thing (maybe got a heart rhythm back?) Or a bad thing. Weather was perfect. Low humidity & high of 81.

How cool!  Chris did the bike escort for the race leader one year for a HIM i participated in - surprisingly I was not the racer he escorted

Well Choo didn't cancel the swim. I'm waiting for official reports but the times I saw were about 20 minutes faster than usual on the swim so I think that's "normal" for Choo.

And the weather looked perfect.

**sigh**

you know damn well if I sign up for it again it'll be hotter than $&^* and the water will be slower than usual.

I was both happy for and angry that they had such perfect weather!! I've been reading a lot of the post-race FB posts which always make me think I want to do another IM. For the last 3 years I've been able to ignore those thoughts, but today I realized that 2022 may be my last reasonable chance to do another.  It hit me like a ton of bricks that I am old!  Mainly, though I realized that my knee issues will not get better with time and a bunion i have is almost to the point of needing surgery. So, IF I want to actually try to complete an IM I am running out of time. Cue the sad violin music!

Oh! Sounds fun!

How do you get that type of gig?  Can you use a TT bike or do you have to use a draft legal bike? :-

I have two friends who did choo, I have only seen pictures, stalked them and read their posts, but it looked like a perfect day to race.
AnnMarie, I say strike while the iron is hot. I have already informed D#2 that once she is a podiatrist she is expected to keep my feet race ready.

Curtis, the local sports authority reached out to some cycling groups and I found myself on the list. Some friends of mine have done it in the past who are owners of a LBS.

I was following the 3rd place male pro on the RUN, so I rode my mountain bike. A friend of mine, who raced St George last weekend, was cyclist for the 1st place female pro, and he rode his Greenway cruiser that he rides with his wife on easy paved or dirt paths.

That said, it was the fastest half marathon I've ever done!

What's funny is the pros I followed ended up in my "rode with" group on Strava. LOL

Well crap Phil just told me this morning that he's narrowed down 2022 to Chattanooga again or nothing.

I dunno Oregon70.3 sounds more fun. Robin tell me about that one!!

Welcome to Oregon! I'll probably do the race again unless things are really back to normal for travel (which I somehow doubt) and Mom wants to do a Canada or overseas trip at that time. It's a beautiful course, normally the weather is great that time of year (it was a bit hotter than usual this year), and hopefully they will iron out the swim start issues.

There actually DID end up being a morning clothes drop at the start (positioned maybe 300-400 yards away) although it had said in the online info there wouldn't be. Apparently they got pushback on that, set one up, and announced the change at the pre-race briefing the day before. Welcome news as otherwise they would have had thousands of discarded flip-flops.....It really was at least 1.2 miles (if not further) walk to the start, and I'm guessing a lot of people balked at doing it in throw-away shoes before a HIM. I'd just planned to sacrifice a very old pair of running shoes. So my guess is even if they don't have a special needs drop, you could put the glasses in a hard case and put them at the clothes drop, assuming you had another pair for the bike/run legs. I didn't see any vehicles at the start--it's off a bike path--so not sure how they would get special needs to T1 before the swimmers finish??

Thanks! I'm used to getting from the end of the swim to my bike without my glasses so I wasn't worried about getting them at the end of the swim. I was just worried about walking and standing around for so long not being able to see more than a foot in front of my face. I'll bring a pair of old glasses to put in the drop bag so if they get lost no big deal.

Randee, my husband's sister and her family live in Vancouver, WA so this seemed like a nice race to go to and visit family. A lot of my team mates have signed up for the race as well so I may have fallen to a bit of peer pressure, haha! I decided on a relay because who knows if my left limb will decide that running is allowed or not. I jokingly asked Tim if he wanted to do a relay and he jumped on that idea. He's done a marathon in every state so now he's trying to do a half mary in every state. This will knock off Oregon for him.

I think this is about to snowball quickly......

2020 was the first year, right? Did it sell out? I guess not many do these days.

2021 was the first year. Karen, Hot Runner, did the race this year. It's her fault I started thinking about it because the river swim sounds like fun. I've never swam in a river because any river here that is truly deep enough to swim in is probably not safe to do so or way to flipping cold!

Here's Karen's race report: https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

Ummm.....if you mean descend on Salem for the race or a Manatee get-together before or after, sure. If you mean personally descend on our house to stay, maybe not. No spare bedroom. Plus we're about 65 miles south of Salem so it would be a REALLY early race morning (as stated in my report). You're welcome to visit in person if you happen to be in town or passing through and are vaccinated, though. (I live with 83 year old Mom so am pretty cautious with health matters.)

Should probably go ahead and enter Oregon 70.3 before it sells out. (No, it didn't last year, to my knowledge. I entered only 3-4 weeks before the race!) I'd hoped that things might be more normal travel-wise by then and we could go to Canada or Europe again (plus it's easier to get a Worlds slot at Calgary), but have pretty much given up hope of that happening in the foreseeable future, at least for Americans and for ordinary mortals who can't afford the possibility of getting quarantined or stuck overseas.

This Robin is hoping to be well enough to go to New York for the NY City tri then. I deferred from 2020. With the option of 2021 or 2022 I am glad i pushed it out to next year for so many reasons.

Proof of life and motivation seeking post...

Life is busy here, with work and school, but I have to admit I absolutely love the school aspect! I am trying to complete my bachelor degree in ethnic studies and I am fascinated by the subject. Well, heartbroken too, as the history is very upsetting, but learning - and sharing that knowledge with my kids - I absolutely very rewarding.

Training wise... I can't get myself to have a consistent training. I think once I make it a habit it will come naturally. But right now I either have to make myslef, or i am an expert in finding excuses.

I decided to do baby steps, so i am biking for around an hour, with a goal of 2-3 times per week. And running as often as time and weather permits, starting with 20-30 minutes.

I would absolutely love to do some ultra runs plus Oly/HIM triathlon next year, so I really need to get the training and habit going.
Knowing that I completed 50k, half, and marathon with barely any training does not help...

What are your advices and tips to get the butt outside and train?

I need to schedule it, not just say, "if time permits" or "if the weather cooperates."  For me, I need to have a training plan and put it on the calendar to get it to happen. Mostly that means a formal training plan but there have been times in my life when it meant show up for group rides on Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday or something similar.  But mostly, I need it scheduled.

I don't know, you are in a hectic phase of life. That is a lot going on. I think that what works for you are the things you will actually do and 'should' let yourself off the hook for the rest. 'Should' is a hard word and I get wanting to train for all the things ... and don't get me wrong, I am not saying not to try but there is an intersection of what you will actually do and what fits in your life. Training and triathlon are hobbies, they keep you fit, yes, but also it should also be fun for you - not another obligation.

Do you do well with accountability? Would a coach help? A coach should be able to listen and plan for you training that fits into your life and goals. Or is it signing up for Masters swim and paying money and showing up a couple of times a week. I am usually in the camp of 'something is better than nothing'
