I almost forgot my exciting new purchase! I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Garmin watch! It just came today and I love it already. It's the Garmin Forerunner 255S. S stands for small, so it's not super bulky, which is nice. It also plays music (to headphones). Maybe I'll go on a walk later to try it out

Aaah, triathlon’s 5th discipline, buying stuff, one of my favourite ones! Hope you like it. I have a Forerunner 235 (I think, could be 735). It doesn’t play music that I know of but I am sure it does many things I am not aware of.

Got in another 45 minute PZ ride this morning, followed by 10 minutes of arms, 10 minutes of core, and a little yoga. I picked an intermediate class and determined that in Peloton terms I am a beginner. I prefer just an easy, basic flow right now. I gave up when they started doing weird stuff, but am going to do a 30 minute class tomorrow morning if I have time before I leave for vacation. Either that, or will do one when I get to the beach b/c I will be in the car a lot tomorrow.

Not sure how much I will post next week, but I hope everyone has an awesome week and a half! I'm planning on continuing my progress, running or biking most days, doing arms 3x, core at least 6x, and yoga EVERY. DAY.

15 stages done and about 300 miles total.  Lots more cycling on tap this week and I'm holding steady on a little swimming and running, plus my @#$@#$!!!  core work.  I'm going to attempt another early AM race tomorrow morning as I'm a glutton for punishment.  It's a five mile time trial with the last mile being straight uphill so probably 21-22 minutes of hell all-in.

I also my first EPL match this weekend....Arsenal vs. Everton.  It wasn't even a match, Arsenal just totally outclassed them.  Score was only 2-0 but it wasn't that close.

Much better result than last week - I actually woke up a little after 5 AM which gave me more time to wake up and then get a good warm-up in before the ITT.  PR over last year's Tour by eight seconds and tied or set all-time power records from about 7 minutes through 21 minutes.  Finished up with a quick run on the treadmill and some lower body strength and core work.  Five stages to go - tomorrow is almost 40 miles through France which I'll do Z2 except for the climbs and sprints.

I've been a bit of a space cadet the last week or so--missed a lot of posts! Last week was rest week for me and for some reason, rest week really throws me for a loop, as if without having to carefully plan my week to maximize time efficiency, I lose my abilities to manage everything in life. Anyway...last build before taper started today! MiTi is 26 days from today, so I have two weeks of build, then a two week taper. My swim coach actually tried to start tapering today and I was all...ummm...he!! no. You cannot make me start tapering four weeks out. His argument is that it works for him and Mary, a national champion swimmer on our master's team. Both of them are 75+yo--I think those extra 30 years might require a four week taper, but at 43, I'm just fine with the two week taper my plan calls for.

Swam 2000yds this morning. At lunch, I have a 45' tempo run scheduled. It coincides with the beginning of an excessive heat warning. Not the brightest idea I've had this week, but I have to be on a call for an hour where I'll do no talking at all, so I figured I should multitask. The mute function is a wonderful thing!

@Gretchen:  yeah, four weeks of swim taper is a lot unless you're swimming like tens of thousands of yards a week; I usually only taper swimming maybe a week (run first, then bike, then swim as I get closer to a race).  I also think we're in the point of the summer that it's hot no matter when you run so at least you'll be heat acclimated?

I have been super consistent with my running this week! I've ran every day at least for a little. Still need to get in this morning's run (currently procrastinating). I am starting at 5k program through my Garmin with Galloway, so will be running ~3 times a week through October. Also did some arms and core, but need to get my yoga mat out today!

Nice work, Nicole, getting it done on vacation.  I always find that I really want to chill out and do nothing on vaca, but then with all the revelry I NEED to do something active.  Plus, when do you have all of that free time available?

Today was the hardest day in quite a while for me, 1800 yards in the pool and some strength training at 6 AM, then 2 hours on the bike at lunch doing the longest route in France on Zwift.  My fitness and fatigue numbers on Training Peaks are crazy high right now - definitely need a recovery week next week.  Four stages to go and tomorrow is going to be easy for sure.

Nice Nicole, sounds like you are succeeding better than me at keeping up the good work during your vacation!

Listen to your body Mike, if you need a rest, take it, it's important at our age to avoid injury! (we're about the same age, right)?
I am intrigued about the EPL. How does that work? Do you control a player or the whole team?

Gretchen a 4 week taper sounds tough, even for me so for you.... mission impossible! LOL

Starting this weekend, I have a race (almost) every week now. Should be fun. Here's the list

*This Saturday (July 23rd): a 300m/9k (mtb) /6k tri which I will use as training and transition practice. No pushing here
*July 30th: a mini tri (300/16/3) in which I intend to red line from start to finish and win (it's a small village race, most of the people doing the mini are beginners so I have a shot at the podium)
*August 6th: a run event where you run a course which is 6.7k long with start every hour. The winner is the last man/woman standing, could go on for days... For me it will be a training session. Looking at 2 laps, possibly 3
*August 17th: a 520/18/4.2 mini tri on the site of the Ironman taking place that weekend. Should be fun. No time goal here, just planning on having fun
* August 29th: Sprint tri (reduced swim-400m) on my home turf. Small village race which I won 4 years ago. Would like to do well here
*Sept 3rd: Sprint tri. Another small village race which I won last year without even trying. Hoping to defend my tilte
*Sept 7th: 10k run- Looking at equalling my PB (52 min)

I hope I can stay healthy and injury free to do them all.

@Mike—TdF is still going on? ?? I have no idea. Sounds like you’re killing your your though!

For me…just a 5:30 ride today followed by a 45’ brick run. The ride was fine, the run was rough. It is HOT here. I was parked in the shade and my car read 124F (51.1C) when I got in afterwards. It cooled down to 108F after a bit of driving. Run probably would have been better, but somehow I managed to jamb the lid on the hydro flask I was carrying my nutrition in and do get it open I decided the best approach was to turn it upside down and whack it on my truck bed. The lid came off…yes it did…but then, since my bottle was upside down, half of one of my big bottles spilled. So…down about 20oz of Infinit. I felt that on the run.

that's hot! very important to stay hydrated then so the little misshap with your hydro flask was a bigger deal than it would have been with cooler weather

We had about 32C (90F or so) on Wednesday for our run intervals with my group. Not too bad actually, we were in the shade the whole time and ended up in the lake at the end.

Me overtrain?    Maybe overreach occasionally but I'm pretty in-tune with a good beat down vs. risking injury.  I had an easy day on the bike yesterday and today, two stages races to go.  And yes I don't recover in my 50s as well as I did even 7-8 years ago.

As for the EPL, not sure what you mean by "control" - all I did was sit in the stands and watch the match. 

Not sure if I mentioned it but I'm going to give the full Olympic tri a whirl in September.  I had originally signed up as an aquabike last year but deferred when my BIL was in the hospital.  I can do the full tri at the same price and I've been successful running this year (I guess it takes five years for a back surgery to take LOL) so what the hell.  I plan on run-walking it but walking 2-3 minutes through the water stops each mile, which should get me around a 1:05-1:10 10K...looking to break three hours for the Oly.

Go Mike—Oly is a great distance!!!

It has been a week here. Almost all my training volume has been concentrated in three big workouts (swim, bike, run—duh). Bike I did on Thursday, went great. Swim I did on Friday, although I only got in 2200 of the planned 3800, due to massive calf cramping starting at about 1500. Run was today, and it went well—fastest 10mi ever (still really slow, just fast for me). All in all, it feels really good to have these three workouts and it feels like all my training is coming together.

Yeah, I definitely got lots of relaxation time, but found it easier to relax when I got a workout in that day
