Huddleston, Virginia
United States
Roanoke Valley YMCA
80F / 27C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 07m 36s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 17/22
Pre-race routine:

Fussed about with the bike a bit
Event warmup:

I did not get into the water until too late to do a proper warm-up. I believe that this threw a mental blanket on the beginning of my swim.
Swim
  • 32m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have not been in the pool enough over the past few weeks and it showed on race day. I really struggled to finish the swim at all. The thought of throwing up my hand and bailing on the whole race did occurr to me more than once during my swim. I was able to stick it out though. I swam a whole lot more breaststroke than I intended to. I intended to swim no breaststroke.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more leading up to the race
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

I ran my bike up the hill at the beginning of the bike leg. I had trouble when I raced here in the spring, and I knew that trying to start on the hill would be problematic. I did have a good T1, though
What would you do differently?:

More bodyglide on my ankles
Bike
  • 1h 20m 8s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Boy, my bike leg was rough. I was having a hard time maintaining anything like the kind of speed that I know I cam capable of. I was very disappointed in my time and speed.
What would you do differently?:

I really need to lose about 40 pounds. That will make all the difference
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

T2 went OK. This was probably the highlight of my whole race. I have to run with socks, and I was able to get them on quickly.
Run
  • 1h 11m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

I was DFL for my group on the run. The wheels just fell off.I could not make my legs turn over and I had to walk a whole lot.
What would you do differently?:

I think that I did not take on enough calories on the bike, and I thinnk that being 30 pounds heavier than last year did not help.
Post race
Event comments:

Set-up and the Kirk family YMCA did a bang-up job of registration, marking, and manning the water stops. Hats off to them.

You may not be happy with your race but I am still impressed.  That has to be a hilly course for both bike and run.   I assume the swim was in Smith Mtn Lake, used to be one of my favorite place to be.

Hey~ How about that headwind, eh? And on the run, just one nasty steep hill? I thought all the hills were nasty. That one was particularly bad though.

I'm impressed at how well you did being 30 lbs heavier. Way to stick it out. Will you be doing this race again next year?

Thanks for the kind words.

Yes I will do it again next year, if for no other reason than to beat this year's time (hopefully by a whole lot)
