A few friends and I are looking into doing Chicago next summer, and signup starts this weekend. I know it's a bit early, but I'd like to plan ahead a little and gain some information before I drop $125 for an entry fee!

Is this a worthwhile event? I know it's huge, but I'd still like to do it for the experience even if I am nowhere near a PR. Do nearby hotels sell out quickly? How late can I think about signing up without making it a total scramble (is there a chance of it selling out, given how huge it is)?

Any other thoughts/suggestions/comments from people who've done it before?

Thanks!

It will sell out, probably late winter or early spring. If you do the olypmic you will wait around for hours after Transition closes and your wave starts....

Lots of crowd support, you swim along a wall so people scream at you...bike on LSD, which is rare it only closes down for bikes once or twice a year.

I have no desire to race it cause I'm in the city and it doesn't appeal to me as I want to get out of the city to race.

Very well run...expo is huge.

There are actually a couple of threads on this race where people who have done it, myself included, gave comments about the course and overall organization. Unfortunately I don't know what they were named or exactly when they were up, but they were started within a few weeks of the race. If you can find those they might help you.

The expo is awesome. Even though I was doing Indianapolis this year, I still went to the expo. It's huge.

expo was decent but then again when you been to chicago marathon expo which I think is the world's largest then nothing else compares to it.

I plan on signing up on Oct 1st or so. I missed out when I finally decided to do my first tri and I really like to make this race my A tri race. a friend of mine did it got 3rd in his a/g/weight division would have gotten first but he got a flat on LSD. I also beleive its the worlds largest tri.

Well worth it!  The planned and clearly announced and anticipated waits and delays must be expected when organizing an event this BIG.  The organizers told us to expect a delay between transition set-up and race time.  Take a sleeping bag an crash for an hour or two before the race (no problem).

I had no problems with the organization.  I can't imagine pulling something like this off better than Chicago did.  1st class all the way.  Great event.
