I'm right there with you. I've never been a runner, but since I want to do a triathlon next year I thought that working up for this would give me a good base. I'm sort of making up my own workout routine...so I hope I"l be ready.

It will be my first 1/2 as well.  Training has been a little sporadic but getting more organized now.  It helps to have running partners, they rarely let you off the hook!  Good luck and I hope to see you there.

I'm in trouble! I'm still going to come to Houston, but I am seriously doubting my ability to run this half marathon. It will be hard to get back on track until after the Thanksgiving holiday and I am going to give it my absolute best. I need some running buddies, but honestly, I just don't have the schedule to accomodate another scheduled time during the week. It feels like triathlon season all over again.

Anyway, sorry, didn't mean to moan and complain. I will be there and look forward to seeing you guys!

Oh, it's also my first half marathon. My longest race distance is only a 5K.

I will be running the 1/2 in preperation for the Lonestar 1/2 IM. My training has been terrible lately (read: havent run in 2 weeks!) but I am going to get back on track today. Should be a fun race. My first 1/2 for sure but hopefully more to come in the future!

Just filled yesterday, the day a half-marathoner friend of mine decided to move down to Texas and stay with me for the months of January & February, so she didn't make it either.  She's still going to help me with the party though.

MarkQuiet, you can still Party Qualify in one of several ways:  jockstrapping, volunteering, or running the 5K!

Welcome! Do you live in Houston? If so, what part? There are a few of us here in Houston. I am running the 1/2 mary and you are right, the 5k is not sold out but the mary and 1/2 mary are. Lonestar should be a really fun race. My wife will be doing the Sprint on Saturday and then be on a relay for the 1/2 ironman on Sunday and I am just going to do the 1/2 ironman. Hope to meet you soon!

I am in Humble. As of now, I do not have anyone to train with on the bike and swim parts. Running, well I have been doing that since 1978....LOL. My days are so weird, but they will let up during the Christmas break. I am looking forward to the Sprint Tri. I am not sure what bike to purchase or what triathlon stuff to wear. Argghhhh!

Well if you have any specific bike questions dont be scared to ask them or search through previous threads. There is a lot of info to learn here. First you have to decide on a budget, then look at what you want to use the bike for. If you are just going to be using it for triathlon and your budget supports it, you should consider a tri specific bike. If you are wanting to do other organized rides or cycling racing, you should look into a road bike and possibly adding a set of aero bars for tri's. As far as what to wear, a pair of tri shorts and tri jersey is a great investment and you can find them relatively cheap on clearance online if you don't mind buying last years stuff. That is what I do. Let us know if you have any questions!

Ok. Where do you get the Tri stuff on clearance? Do they sell them at Academy? Where do you go in the Houston area for bikes? So many questions, so little time. As far as running, I am happy with my Asics 2110's. They and the Brooks Avengers are serving me well.

I'm just curious as this will be my first 1/2 mary, but.....Is it worth "tapering" for this distance? My training has bascially been halfing a full-marathon plan, but they start to taper pretty soon. My long run is about 10-12 miles, and I wasn't sure if I should just keep pushing upwards, or if I should keep building up to the 13 mile distance since this distance isn't as "dangerous" as a full-marathon.

Thanks

I have not run a 1/2 mary but I am running Houston so take this for what its worth (not much). I have really slacked on my training the last few weeks since we have been moving but so far my  long run has only been 7 miles. I am going to work up to about 11 in the next few weeks and then taper. I think about a week long taper is probably a good idea to give your body time to get ready to race. I really dont think that the difference between a long run of 12 miles like you are already doing or potentially stretching it out to 13 will really make any difference. Good luck in training and hopefully we'll see you on race day!

I did the Vega 1/2 with my longest run being 12 miles about 3 Weeks before! I got sick and couldnt run for a week and then only did two 4 mile runs and no running 1 week prior. It went well. I think if you have run a 10 or more once or twice your good to go. IMO.
Am running the Houston 1/2 as well but have been running low mileage for now, will get (2) 10 milers in before the 1/2 and just kick in for the 13.1.. hey its only a 5k after 10.

Cool....that's what I was hoping for. The last time I did a 10, I felt like I could finish 13 if I had to. I still have to take a couple of walking breaks, but I just want to finish within the time limit. I just started running about 4 months ago so all of this is new to me.

Sorry, just came across the Texas forum. Yes it is worth tapering. Do not do the standard 3 week taper if you are doing a half, that is more for the extra beating/recovery you need for thoe who trained for the whole marathon. I personally do about a one week taper for a half. It really depends how long your ordinary runs are, but hopefully you have seen some of the half Marathon plans so that you can see how it is done. I typically will run about 1/3 of my weekly milage during that week. One day, probably Tuesday or Wednesday, I will try to put in a 2-4 miles at my half marathon pace.
