Do I have to carry water in this race? I wasn't going to. I was only going to bring my own nutrition....which was just gu packs. But I was reading a RR from the Walt Disney Half and they mentioned running out of water while on the race. Should I be bringing my own water?

Wowza! I don't really mind the cold so much but I really hope it is not raining/sleeting! Sharon, you shouldn't need your own h2o. The course should be pretty well stocked I think.

Question: Since this is my first 1/2 mary and I was there spectating last year so I know how crazy it is at the start, what is the best way to avoid the total chaos and mass crowds etc at the start? Is it even possible? How long before it clears out and one can run rather free from having to dart back and forth?

For the Las Vegas run the starting temps were close to 40* with the wind blowing about 15 mph which made it feel like 36*. It was not good but at least there was no RAIN!
With Temps supposed to be in the mid 30's* with wetness is Not a Good Thing so Layer up and dont FORGET YOUR RAIN COAT OR TRASHBAG!!! Maybe 2 of them..

I guess this will leave my family out for spectating..

Sounds like the forecast for the Chicago marathon. Fortunatelyt it didn't rain, but it was windy, overcast and cold. The fan fare made it a great event just the same!

There are water stations every 2 miles if I'm remembering correctly.  At this point I'm wondering if they'll have hot chocolate!

I've never run in rain before......

That said. If it's raining and cold (below 40°, do you still recommed wearing long pants? Wouldn't that get all soggy and wet, even with wearing a poncho? Oh, I suppose I could wear rain pants....I was just thinking that if it was rainy and cold, I wonder if just shorts would be better than soggy pants?

Yeah I dont have a clue! If it is cold and potentially raining I will probably wear some nylon adidas pants over my running shorts that I can take off if I get hot. I will probably wear a running shirt and I got a light north face running jacket for Christmas that I'll probably use too. Might carry a trash bag or something. Any tips appreciated!

That hot chocolate idea sounds great!

Will they cancel the race if there are severe thunderstorms? I mean, rain is one thing, thunder and lightning?

Luke, I like your idea. I guess it depends on how cold it is that morning. I'll have to dig up my old rain pants. Maybe I'll wear my shorts and then the rain pants. I'm going to get those disposable ponchos at Walgreens.

Has anyone ever raced in horrible weather?

The race will go on regardless of precipitation. The race will only be cancelled if weather conditions present imminent danger to participants. The Houston Marathon has never been cancelled in any of its 35 years

65° and 30% of rain don't exactly make me want to bust out the GoreTex.Cool

Looks like the front might wait until the evening to come through, have to keep an eye on it regardless.

I just check out www.khou.com and the extended forcast is looking good there too, just rain.

I have different clothes prepared for cold or wet so it will be a morning decision. This time I will eat about 2 hours before the run so I will be up early. For the Vegas 1/2 I just ate 2 granola bars and some dry ceral and was a hungry during the run and used all 3 of my gels which during training I would only use 2 if I ate good.

Anyway, I saw the finishers medals last night on the TV and I want mine, so cold, hot, rain, sleet or snow, I'm crossing the finish line!!!

Who's with me??????

Be careful. Weather.com (The Weather Channel) and Accuweather are computer generated forecasts. There is no human element to it. Right now the frontal passage is forecasted by noon on Sunday. The temperature WILL drop 30 degrees in a matter of 30-40 minutes. Right now, there is no pre-frontal precipitation with this front. Things can and do change. The models (GFS, UKMet and EMCW) are flip flopping everywhere. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather and your local channels to keep updated.

From another forum. I am pretty sure the Houston Marathon is ok. The next week is going to be cold.

12z GFS run coming in now ... out to about 7 days ... good news/bad news scenario. Good news is that the ice threat continues to look diminished as the trough remains progressive and most moisture is well off the coast by Monday. Bad news is it looks like the coldest run yet of the GFS for Texas.

http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/fpc.s...

These are not official forecasts, only guidelines to what MAY happen in the upcoming week. The forum I take these from are populated with amateur and professional meteorologists. Remember, I have to run the 5K on Sunday. I will freeze/melt with you. LOL

I love running in the rain when it's warm - just wear tri clothes and let it wash!

In the cold with cold wind or wet, I wear a kind of track suit made of water-resistant material like a windbreaker.  The pants say "zziff, zziff, zziff" when I step (nylon-on-nylon version of the chub rub!) but other than that it's fine.

Let it be cold or warm and rainy, just don't be high winds! In Chicago this year it was like 40 F at the start, had been raining, but did not much during the race, and 10-20 mph winds. Most people wore hats, one or two technical (nylon/synthetic) shirts and shorts, light gloves (the $1.00 type you can throw away) and shorts. I hate cold weather and wasn't going for a PR so I ran as above except with thin "lycra-type" tights. I'd sacrifice a minute or two for comfort over 26 miles. My kids laughed at me because I was the only one in the photos who was not wearing shorts. If it is 50-60 F, who cares if it rains just keep the wind speeds down and I will forego the tights! If it is windy consider more fitted shirts/clothes because of drag. The worst thing that could happen for mewould be to fly down there and there be lightening so that they would have to cancel.

I much prefer Mr. Bear's forecast. It would be so cool if come Sunday it was just overcast!

Hey, for those of you who've done this before.....is it safe to leave your stuff in the baggage area? With all of this unsettled weather forecast I might be packing all kinds of clothes and dry clothes and shoes/socks for after the race.

How do you carry your nutrition with you if you don't have pockets? Depending on what I'm wearing, I may not have pockets. Someone recommended me stapling my Gu packs to my race belt. I might try that.

I have found recently that I like my cycling jersey as my outer layer. It is great to have pockets. I have this one that is not too loose, but has the pockets in back. Its even better than having the running shorts with the pockets.

Baggage area is fairly safe, though I wouldn't leave my wallet or valuables. Not sure of the entire layout of the start finish, but it seems to me that parking should be fairly close, especially if you get there on time, that you could leave the bulk of your clothing in your car and access it before/after the race. Maybe bring just an extra top and a garbage bag you can toss or check into baggage claim.

I've acquired several pairs of shorts with adequate pockets for gels and my cell phone, the cycling jersey is a good option, and I've also safety pinned gels to my shorts. Remember this is *only* a half marathon, one or two gels should be more than enough.

courtney_leone - 2007-01-11 12:44 PM Let's discuss recovery....what should I expect in general?

I have nothing of value to help you since I dont have a clue but I will be at church by 2:00 practicing with a youth band and will be on stage leading worship at 6:00. I think this might be a week where I use a stool rather than standing.

I am sure there will be some tightness for a day or 2 but I would hope that the legs would be fully recovered within a few days from the 1/2.

Following my 10 mile run, going down stairs was challenging.  It was not necessarily too bad, just very noticeable.  I am expecting to be that sore and then some.  I hope to remain minimally active, walking etc following to keep from getting so stiff.  I am thankful that Monday is a holiday so I don't have to get up for work!

After my 1st and 2nd 1/2, my hips were very sore. I did recover by the next night though. The funny thing is, Bonnie and I did a 19 mile run, I felt great after and was only a little sore the next day. I have no idea what I will feel like after 26.2 miles......
